AP program = racially segregated?

Punpunun, I don’t think you’re proposing scheduling AP classes by race. That proposal was made by a citizen advisory board to the Charlotte Mecklenburg school board, as reported in the Charlotte Observer today.

You are free to agree, disagree, do nothing, or make another proposal if you wish.

People self-segregate. Nothing new.

Compared to everyone else’s school that whites are the majority for their APs classes, mine is different. I would say we are 60% Hispanic 20% Black 15% White and the rest are mixed or are Middle Eastern, Indian or Asian (But they’re minuscule in my school) in my school. For the AP’s almost all classes are dominated by Hispanics, a third is roughly black. For whites there’s only one white kid who has two APs with me and he is practically one of five maybe out of my grade that’s white and is in takes AP.

Punpunun, I should also have said that your initial observation is very relevant and timely. I would love to hear some proposals as to how a school system can change the disparity.

And the thing I meant to get to but forgot and now it’s too late to edit…

My AP classes were mostly Whites, Asians, and Jews.

“I would love to hear some proposals as to how a school system can change the disparity.”

Outreach. Even though folks have tried this forever, make the mark of learning “cool,” or at least not a crippling social stigma, so kids are more inclined to challenge themselves.

Also, public schools need to be better at scoping out and identifying “gifted” kids at an early age. Parent’s play too big of a role in this, and in my opinion, the more resources a kid’s parent’s have, the more likely the kid will be categorized “special” and then tracked into divergent courses.

“People self-segregate. Nothing new.”

Ya, every person ever is totally racist/class-ist…

Waitttttt… maybe that’s just you, nah?

$10 says this thread’s gonna lead to an intense argument about affirmitive action and/or racism.

It’s an observation. I know we CCers get tons of homework, but have you gone outside recently? Because I’m pretty sure that anyone who’s been outdoors in America has seen self-segregation. Why do you think Chinatown and Little Italy exist? Why do you think there are still Polish parents who will only allow their kids to marry Catholics? Cambodian gangs? How do you explain that?

Funny that I was thinking the exact same thing…

Of course it’s just him. Oh wait, what was that? God says you’re an *******. But fear not, I still completely agree with you for he’s just shown the flaw in his design, that humans are innately different, OH NOEZ… He’s gonna get pwnd by God…

Really?

My school is mostly white, with almost half minorities.

I’m the only full Hispanic in AP classes (and I am proud of it).

You do realize that makes no sense, right?

How does that not make sense? Mostly = more than half. If minorities are almost half the school, then whites, make up “most” of the school’s population.

My school has something similar to an “AP Lunch”. It’s an annual luncheon where all the AP students are recognized and they get special treats in the cafeteria. In my school, where ~half the students are minorities, there will probably be only a few minorities out of the over 1oo students that attend the luncheon.

I think this happens in a lot of schools, especially more urban/poorer schools.

We do not have an AP Lunch per say. However, most of the kids in the honors/ap classes have the same gym and lunch periods.

my school is like uhhh

15% asian
70% white
5% black
5% hispanic
5% other

Random guess for my school:

75% white
20%Asian
5%African American
and a couple random kids from other

oh something else I’ve been wondering…is it “per say” or “per se” ???

^It’'s “per se”

My old school was about 25% black. I was the only black student in my AP classes and one of two in my honors classes. However, the divide wasn’t racial - it was socioeconomic. Every student in the school from a middle class family (there is no upper middle class here) was in honors classes and all or a few AP classes. I was the odd one out in that respect.

I am one of the VERY very few Hispanic students in any AP class.
AP Spanish Lang has about 40% Hispanics (i mean, c’mon they’re native speakers)
AP USH only me and 1 other student who are Hispanic
AP Chem only me
Honors Pre-Cal about 2
AP Art History about 4
AP English only me.

its a shame. my school demographic is 70% caucasian 20% hispanic 5% black 3% asian and 2% other. and about 95% of the AP kids are white ;(
