I've only taken 1 AP (5) and I will probably take at least 4 APs in my Junior year. Should I just aim for AP Scholar with Distinction or National? Would taking 7 APs all at once burn me out?

Is getting National Scholar worth all of the hard work and time or not?

That depends on really what your priorities (and limits) are. For me, self-studying AP classes Junior year wasn't as important as some of my other commitments.

Haha...I was in this exact same situation after my sophomore year...I took 1 AP soph year and was set to take 4 jr year. But I self-studied 3 more to try for the National AP Scholar. In the end, I got one 3 and didn't get it. I think you should go for it though. It's a great goal and it'd be quite an achievement if you get it.

I'm going for the National Scholar in junior year. Theres no point in winning awards senior year at all. I took only 1 AP my sophmore year (5) and im taking 7 this year, 5 of which are self-study. About 4 of them are hard-core AP's while the other 3 are sortof fluff crap AP's which im doing just to get a National Scholar award.

I wasn't able to take any APs sophomore year, so this year I hope to take 3 and self study maybe one or two and try to get either AP Scholar with either distinction or honor.

If you're a very-hard working student, then reach for the stars and go for national ap scholar.

Its a nice award, helps fill empty holes in the "Academic Honors" section of the App, and saves you thousands of dollars if you do well. If you get straight 5's I think that your senior year will be a lot happier, as now you dont need to fret AS much about financial aid or merit aid since you can already skip a semester of college >:-D

It's worth a try. In fact, many people do complete enough APs to get the AP National Scholar. Are AP classes that much harder than normal classes? Just take what you can and drop back down if it's too hard.

If I had not gotten the two 3's, I would have gotten AP National Scholar by the end of my junior year. There's still about 6 more AP courses I'm going to be taking next year. Am I burnt out? Not at all.

Just because it's AP doesn't mean it's impossibly hard. They offer these courses in high school for a reason. IMO, it's mostly about how much dedication you have.

The awards themselves don't mean much. Adcoms would much rather look at exactly which AP courses you took and how you did. The awards are only as good as "Honor Roll" when they have a GPA to look at.

I heard you can put down AP National Scholar in your Awards when you apply even if you haven't really achieved it by the end of junior year but plan to get it by the end of senior year. Is this true?

Can I just get AP Scholar with Distinction this year and then put AP National Scholar in my Apps? I don't know how this works. What about teams, club officer positions and such? For example, can you write: Basketball team (10,11, 12) even if you haven't really joined but plan to? What happens if something happens and you can't join? Then what?

No. You cannot "plan to get" an honor that depends on scores on a particular test, just as you list your senior year grades because you "plan" to get all A's. List only achievements that you have actually achieved.

Planning to join a club is different (and of course this only applies to clubs that don't meet until after your app is sent in). Those are within your control, and it's up to you whether you join or not. If you have to audition or try out for the club/team/show, you should put that you will try out. Basketball team (10, 11, 12-pending tryouts).

If something happens and you can't try out, you send an explanation to the schools telling them why.

I'm independently studying 2 (psych + env sci) in 9th grade, and then 2-3 more in 10th grade. My school doesn't offer APs, only IB, so I hope to be a Natl AP Scholar before 12th grade and also take the Diploma course... would this be too much?
