For admissions, is self-reporting of AP scores the only necessary way to add my scores to my application? Do I need to send via collegeboard or is that only for credit and therefore not necessary until after acceptance?

Offical AP scores are not required for determining admission and, if you want college to know your scores, you can self-report the scores in the app, an essay, or just send a photocopy of the scores. You do not need to send offical scores until after you are admitted and you want college credit for the course.

The exception to the above is that some colleges accept for admission AP scores in lieu of other test scores… For example, for admission you can submit to NYU 3 AP scores in lieu of sending any other test scores such as SAT or ACT. Those colleges rerquire offical AP scores from the College Board if you choose that route for admission.
