AP score submission question

Son is applying ED to an Ivy. His major is engineering Physics. He got 5’s on AP Physics, APUSH, AP World, but 4 in AP Lang. should he submit his scores? The 5 in Physics looks great, but the 4 could hurt him.

I would not hesitate to submit a 4; it will not hurt.

My rule of thumb is report all 4s and 5s. Don’t report anything lower.

I would submit what the school accepts.

If you have an AP on the transcript and don’t submit a score, they already know it wasn’t up to snuff.

I think APs matter little for admission. The grades yes. The test no.

It’s more the credits you earn.

Maybe I’m wrong but that’s my belief.

Also if you are a stem kid, the 4 in Lang is less of an issue. If you had a 4 on Calc BC, for instance, it maybe more of an issue. Anyway you can’t avoid submitting the Calc BC score in practice.

Also I suspect this AP Lang may have been taken without taking the accompanying class in the school. If this is the case, and if you are really concerned, you can skip reporting the 4. As others said above, 4s are ok to report.

That’s a little too narrow, IMO. OP

That means you submit nothing to Harvard, since they accept nothing. Or you don’t submit your 5’s in USH or Physics 1 to Yale since they don’t accept those subjects.

And I’m not a big fan of changing the common app for each uni; that’s how mistakes happen.

Yes if you have a 5 you submit. That’s a no brainer. I meant if a school only accepts 5 submitting a 4 will not get you credit.

Reading Harvards web page they accept 4 and 5 depending on the class. It says you need to have advanced standing so not quite sure I understand their rules.

My point was - if you submit scores for half, they’ll naturally assume the others were not up to snuff.

But I also don’t think schools give them weight in an admission decision. I may be wrong but it’s what a few schools said. They’re good for the kid to save money but they’re not why they get in or don’t get in, etc.

If I remember correctly U of SC allowed you to submit 3 AP instead of an ACT…sort of their test optional…at least for class of 21. So that was a place they might impact admittance.

A bit OT, but Advanced Standing is no longer an option for anyone entering Fall 2020 or later. So for those students, there is no longer an option for credit, although course waivers, in some departments, still exist. And 5’s can be used to fulfill the foreign language requirement.

Agreed. But not submitting one or 2 could be for other reasons.

Unless you have 1’s and 2’s, you should self-report all AP scores.

It depends on the college. Some colleges do look at AP scores as part of the admissions packet.

But to the OP…do YOUR colleges consider AP scores in admissions? If not, you can wait to see if you get accepted to send scores IF your colleges give course credit for AP scores.
