AP Scores - Am I F***ed?

Well, I received my AP scores today...

I got three 5's in US, English Lang, and Physics B...

...and a 1 in Computer Science AB.

What do I do now? Is it over? Am I completely screwed? Help. :(

No, just dont report the score. Congratulations on the 5s.

I can elect to send in certain scores and withhold others? I did not mail anything in by June 15th saying that I wanted the score withheld... :(

Can I ask how you got that 1? You seem like a smart guy judging from your other 5s.....I remember the CSAB AP as foolishly easy. If you didn't think you did that badly coming out of the test, I'd recommend you have the collegeboard regrade. I think they'll even check if you messed up bubbling your answer sheet and adjust scores accordingly.

I came out of the exam having lost 15 pounds.

It was my teacher's first year; she had a very hard time catering the course to the test. We did very little, if any, practice for the actual exam. I still think it was the hardest test I've ever taken in my life. I'll be honest, I didn't come out of the room thinking I got a 1, but I'm certainly not entirely surprised. The highest grade in our class was a 3.

i think i'd rather send in a score report with a bunch of 5s and a 1, then take a bunch of AP tests and not send in any of the scores.

showing that you are able to get 5s, several times, in a variety of courses, demonstrates more that's positive about you, then a single 1 would indicate negatively about you. i think it's a net plus.

Would it be kosher to, on the application, list US Hist, English, and Physics as 5s and just not write down Computer Science at all?

agree with denzera. Then, in theadditional info section, you can explain the 1

I'm not sure if selectively choosing which scores to report would be the best move.

you can have collegeboard erase the score (and take if off the official score report) with a fax stating your wish for them to do so. call them up and you can ask about it.

I wonder how many other people explain poor AP scores with "my teacher was bad"...

Don't know if that's the best route to take.

I suggest that any explanation for a bad AP score should come from your guidance counselor rather than from you. He/she will have the scores for the whole class and will be able to put your scores into perspective in a way you cannot. This, of course, is not something that is done in writing but is conveyed over the telephone. I speak from my experience as both a former admmisions officer and a guidance counselor in a private school for many years. I did stuff like this all the time.

As I have mentioned in other threads, my son got a 5 in CompA, but a 2 in USH. The Columbia app doesn't ask for AP scores. He's entering his junior year there.

I really wouldn't sweat it--Columbia isn't saying, "Oh my, he's not a computer genius, turn him down." Our experience was they didn't overemphasize APs or SAT 2's--if they did, my son wouldn't be there now.

i wouldn't spend room on the application trying to explain away the score of 1. let your GC do it if you must, but generally, i'd prefer to leave things un-emphasized than spend a while doing what will essentially sound like whining.

Is it dishonest and/or misleading to list only your good AP scores and leave out a 1 or 2? I don't know, but perhaps.

Should you explain this stuff? No. Never. It's whiny and calls attention to bad stuff.

Are you screwed for life because of a 1 in AP CS? Maybe at Caltech or MIT if you're looking to be a CS major.

I don't think it'll matter that much. I don't get the impression that colleges scrutinize AP scores any more than they do anything else. The fives should be enough to outweigh it in any case, particularly as it's not a core curriculum subject. Of course, all hope of exemption from CS in college is right out.

I got a 2 on my AP studio art portfolio, along with several 4s and 5s in core subjects like english and history, reported all of them, and none of the colleges i applied to (Columbia included) penalized me. So many screwy things can happen to these scores and tests (bad teachers, bad test day, bad test taking skills, bad luck, bad pencil... you get the picture), it's just not worth worrying about. Congrats on the 5s! Feel good about that and don't sweat the 1.
