Help! S just rec’d AP Bio score of “5” which, I believe, gives him 8 credits (4 for each of BI107 and BI108). He’s going to be a freshman in CAS doing the pre-med track but no declared major as yet. According to the pre-med advising, they said he should still take both 107 and 108 for the purpose of getting into medical school. However, when I talked with Sargent School advisor (as they have the Human Physiology major which is also good for applying to med. school), she said that the BI107 course is not mandatory for getting into med school but that he should definitely take the BI108 in Spring.

I hate for him to not make use of the AP credits he’s earned but I don’t know what to tell him to do about taking or not taking the BI107.

Any advice? AliAngel – are you out there!!!

Does CAS require a 5 on the Bio AP?

As far as I can tell, it requires a 4, but if you get a 5, you can get out of both BI107 and BI108. However, if you’re planning on going to med school, you really need the BI108 – for any non-science type of major, it seems as though a 5 will get you out of both courses, thus you would have fulfilled the Science portion of the Divisional Studies requirement.

Depending on the Major, determines if he should take 107. If he is in Sargent college, there is no need to take 107 based on the fact it has nothing to do with Molecular Bio, it’s more ecology based. If he’s a Bio Major, or something in Sargent, he will take enough Bio classes to fill the Med school requirement. Also he could use the credit for 107 and instead of taking 108 take 118. Also BU MAKES you take 108 as they think the AP is too easy compared to the Molecular science that they teach =P.

You can also take the 4 credits for BI107 anyway. They might not count toward med school/his major, but they will still count toward graduation.
