AP scores and the corresponding Area Requirements

So i was a nerd and called in for my AP scores and found out I will get credit for

AP Gov - 5
AP Calc AB - 4
AP Psych - 4
AP English Lit -4
AP US History - 4

So i was wondering which of the area requirements if any do these scores get me credit for? Like i assume the Calc score will count for the 12 credits in Math/Science but what about the rest of them?

AP Gov: 3 credits earned for PLCP 1000T For a score of 4 or 5
AP Calc AB: 4 credits earned for MATH 1310 For a score of 4 or 5
AP Psych: 3 credits earned for PSYC 1010 For a score of 4 or 5
AP English Lit: 3 credits earned for ENGL 1000T For a score of 4 or 5
AP US History: 3 credits earned for HIST 2000T For a score of 5

[Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Credit — Undergraduate, College of Arts & Sciences, U.Va.](http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/college/admissions/ap_credit.html)

ahhh thanks…but how do those relate to the college of arts and sciences area requirements of 2 Social Science classes, 2 Humanities classes, 1 Historical Studies class, 1 Non-Western class, and 4 Natural Science/Math classes

So essentially you have completed…

3 credits of the 6 credit humanities requirement (need 1 more class)
6 credits of the 6 credit social science requirement (COMPLETED)
4 credits of the 12 credit Natural Science/Mathematics requirement (Meaning you most likely need 3 more classes)

Still need…

First Writing Requirement (ENWR 1510/AP Lang score of 5/Portfolio place out/SAT writing score)
Second Writing Requirement (Any college class that is 20+ pages of writing w/revisions and has a student teacher ratio of 30:1)
Non-western perspective 3 credits (1 approved course)
Historical Studies (1 approved course)
Foreign Language (placement score/SAT II score/AP Score/ completion through 2020 of any language)

Note that 1 class can fulfill 2 requirements (i.e. a non-western perspective and a historical studies)

From what I can tell
4 on APUSH = no requirements satisfied (I believe you needed a 5)
4 on Lit = 3 credits for Humanities (6 needed from 2 departments/categories)
4 on Calc = credits for Math/Science requirement (12 credits from 2 departments/categories)
5 on Government = 3 credits for Social Sciences requirement (6 needed from 2 dept/cats)
4 on Psych = I am not sure what this falls under

Also your 4 on Lit could exempt you from First Writing. I read somewhere that you have to send them an e-mail with your score and some essays showing that you are competent enough to satisfy the requirement. This means you can just jump to 2nd writing which you could combine with a Historical Studies requirement to knock that out.
What you have left would be

Competency

 1. First Writing = Done (possibly)
 2. Foreign Language
 3. Second Writing

Area

 1. Social Sciences = 3 credits remaining out of 6
 2. Humanities = 3 credits remaining out of 6
 3. Historical Studies = 3 credits remaining out of 3
 4. Non-Western Perspectives = 3 credits remaining out of 3
 5. Math/Science = 8 credits remaining out of 12

This is so helpful!

I also just wanted to point out that you don’t have to call to find out what credits have been given for HS coursework. You can find them in your SIS. Of course now I can’t remember how I got to the link, but it’s all there! They have already matched up all your AP scores to equivalent requirements. Think we found it under transcripts? My memory is really bad these days, but just search all around your SIS and you’ll find them finally :).

And, son’s SAT Writing portion tested him out of having to take ENWR 1510 (he had a 790W), so that’s also something that could potentially cross that course off your list. But, it sounds like your AP lit (score of 4) will take care of that one too.

On this note, I just found out that May '11 AP exam scores are now officially in today, and had all new scores sent to UVA. And don’t forget to have final transcripts from any dual enrollement cc sent too, so they can update your credits in the SIS.

Jkiwmom, we checked the transcript area and no scores are posted on my son’s account yet. Do you know how long it usually takes before they are posted?

Hmmm, looks like I spoke too soon, sorry! Did you go to “my academics” after signing into SIS, then click on “view unofficial transcript”? That’s where I found it all. Then there’s also the “view transfer credit report” which I was able to open a couple days ago, but for some reason it’s not working right now.

That is what we did:). His unofficial transcript includes his 3 UVA courses, but there are no test credits listed under either the transcript or the test credit section. I hope there wasn’t a glitch with college board sending the scores…

jkiwmom - Prior to today were you viewing scores sent from years prior to 2011? My guess is that the 2011 scores have not hit SIS yet and that we might need to give it a few days. Just a thought.

Yes, I was viewing credits that were from 2010 AP exams. We sent all AP scoresl last fall (even though not officially asked for by any colleges) during admissions. We just called college board and ordered the new 2011 exam scores to be sent today, so yeah, they won’t show up for probably a month would my guess (scores were just released today). I did the “rush service” which is only $10 more, but figure it’s worth it to have them in the SIS a little quicker.

Olduvagrad: When did you order the AP exam scores to be sent? maybe my son’s are just showing up bc they were sent during admissions, but if you did the same then that is odd.

Last year scores for AP exams started showing up the beginning to middle of July for some students and for others it was almost the middle of August.

We only just ordered them a few days ago, so I guess they haven’t had a chance to arrive yet. We may just call and find out if they don’t come a few days prior to orientation:).

Wow! This thread is helpful! From what I’ve heard about UVA advising, it is unlikely to be better than the people above, so would someone mind just double checking me?

Which leaves me with one nonwestern studies, one humanities and three spanish classes (and my second writing requirement)? I think I get it, but I just want to make sure.
