Hey I'm wondering about the AP tests section on the common ap. Are you obligated to put the scores on all of your tests and how much does a 3 hurt you, if at all? I'm referring to the more selective schools like HYPSM, Duke, Rice, WashU, etc.

I second this questions....i have two 5s and two 3s....so im not sure what to do with them.

ok thanks reginald
But I was also wondering if I could choose to put only certain AP scores on my common ap. And if I can, does putting a 3 look better than just simply not putting it or vice versa??
again, mostly i'm asking for the competitive colleges

I would go ahead and put them all to highlight the fact that you have taken a rigorous courseload, plus it would probably be the more ethical thing to do, although I doubt you would get into any trouble for not reporting them.

Also, you should be happy to hear that from my experience AP scores are RARELY used in admissions and carry almost no weight. Of course it would be nice to have all 4/5 but i dont think a 3 would break your application and throw up any red flags. The AP scores are used more for placement after you have been accepted. Hope this helps!

I second schoolsearching. Just taking the AP course and the tets proves that you are a driven student who desires a good education and college. Don't worry about a three. Do show them that you took the test!

I'm worried about that too because I have two 3's and a 4. I asked this in another thread once and people told me that it's good to put all your AP scores just to show you put the effort in to take the test and that you courseload was hard.

... it's supposed to be difficult to get a 5. Your AP scores can't hurt you - they aren't aptitude tests.

Ha, about half the students in the nation don't even pass each test! Put the score, really. I know a boy who got into calpoly with a 3 in euro. You'll be fine.

calpoly is a relatively easy school to get into, afterall its a calstate.

ummm what if you got a 2 (turned out to be a blow off class where we watched movies)

It's up to you but I would put it. What was the class visionquest?

World History

would you report scores of 4 (English Language, US History) to colleges like HYP, STanford, MIT, Columbia, Caltech??
i have a 5 in calc bc and physics b but dont know how i should report my scores. All? None? or only 5s?

imo: Report all the scores. Colleges will see on your transcript that you took the ap class but didn't report a score. Made a 3 in Euro H; disappointing score, but better than a 1 or 2. I'd rather the colleges know that I'd report the 3 than think it was possibly lower.

Does it look weird to a college though if you get an A in the class but a 3 on the test?
This happened in two classes for me this year.
To my defense, my chem class really wasn't up to par. not a very good class. the teacher was cool but just didn't really prepare us that well

I think its best if they see all the scores, even if it isn't a 4/5 because then it showed that it wasnt just an easy AP class that you didn't really care about. Also, they would probably think its better to try and to do okay than to you never tried at all which is the impression they would get.

That's a nice bright spot. Son just got a 3 in APUSH. He's kinda bummed and I'd like to cheer him up with this kind of data. Where did you get it?

You can get all of the grade distributions (for 2007 for now) at collegeboard.com. But if a grade of 3 is considered "passing," there are very few tests where 50% of the tests were a 1 or 2, and some tests have more than 60% just 4 and 5.

i got all 5's and 1 what should i do about that 1 on the common app?!

Regardless, the best option is to list all AP's taken and their test scores. Once again, it shows that you were willing to take the exam. Even at HYMS. Of course not all of their students got all perfect 5s.
