If I failed a ap related to a potential major in the future, will that hurt my chances of being accepted to that college?
How is the grade for that course at school? AP score does not matter much in college admission as you only self report it in most cases.
Oh I meant that I failed the Ap exam. I got an A in the class though.
Where the AP score matters most is admissions to the most competitive colleges. There, both the grade and the score are important. OP, you may be fine for the college you’re thinking of. Just try to understand any weaknesses the test score may reflect. You want to be prepared for the college courses.
Thank you so much. I have my thoughts on Florida colleges like UF, FSU, and UCF. There not highly selective but moderately selective.
I don’t think my ap score will really affect my chances but i get scared what if it will.
The Florida public universities (like UF, FSU, UCF, USF, UNF, UWF, etc.) do not consider your AP scores in admissions. They only consider them after you’ve been accepted and to determine course placement and credits. Same goes for IB and AICE test scores.
“Where the AP score matters most is admissions to the most competitive colleges.”
Do you have evidence of the score mattering for admissions? Every selective college I’ve spoken with said AP scores are not considered for admission. I’m not saying you’re wrong, because if they are considered, that would be good for applicants to know. The issue is that the same number of APs are not offered at all high schools, with some hs not even having APs. And anecdotally I now several applicants with 5s on every AP they took, and averaging about 10 APs getting rejected while people with 1’s and 2s getting in.
Thank you for your help. This has greatly helped me and relaxed some tensions.
Thank you so much. You just reduced my stress so much.
TM, I said, “the most competitive,” not “selective,” which is a different category. This has zip to do with whether some hs don’t offer AP or don’t offer many.
OP is okay. Best wishes, Toomany.
TM, I said, “the most competitive,” not “selective,” which is a different category. This has zip to do with whether some hs don’t offer AP or don’t offer many.
I did mean the most competitive, Stanford, Columbia et. al. I still have not seen any evidence that those schools consider AP scores for admission, as I said people with 5s on 10 or more APs got rejected from those colleges.
Do you have evidence of this - that was my question?
I think the importance of AP scores in college admissions decisions depends in part on the reputation of one’s high school - i.e., how rigorous the classes are - and how one’s course load and grades compare to one’s peers taking the most demanding course load available. If a high school has a reputation for being extremely rigorous, then AP courses/scores won’t matter much to an AO. If it isn’t, then having the AP grades and scores “standardizes” the student’s high school curriculum and makes it easier for an AO to compare and contrast applicants. This is true for very competitive colleges’ admissions officers too.
I understand what you guys means about competitive and selective. My school offers like every AP except those foreign language ones besides Spanish and French. People in my schooo don’t take all the AP my school have. I on the other hand try to. Which then I thin myself out doing so. I took 5 AP this year and failed 1 and got 4 and 5 on the others. I say that’s good but the one I failed is most related to my future major.
Also reading you guys advice and reading things online. Schools do not consider AP into the admission thing at all. They consider if you took it but not if you passed.
For the eviedenve thing, I saw many things about people who are hard working with great essays get in unlike the well rounded person. So AP scores do not matter but it’s more SAT, essays, and GPA.
This is getting ridiculous.
If you go to one of the most competitive hs in the country, you think it’s ok to get an A in an AP, then score dismally? You don’t think TT adcoms will wonder what’s up (with you or your teacher) and then move on to the next kid who succeeded at both?
“Schools do not consider AP into the admission thing at all.” This is the sort of misinfo that spreads and confuses others. Not all colleges-- but that’s different than saying none do.
And the fact top colleges consider them does NOT mean some kid you know who scored 5’s on 10 or more APs was at all compelling for holistic admission. He or she has a full app package, including supps, to produce. It’s one data point of many that go into holistic.
I know you’re just joshing with me, TM. But it’s silly.
Oh ok I see what you mean. Yeah I had a horrible teacher ( got fired anyway) for that class and workload was light.
Yeah I understand what you mean when they will wonder about the ap score and the grade in the class.
ANe yeah I get what you mean by not all colleges put ap into admissions and not all consider it. It depends on the college. Thx to all of you guys lol and sorry for my confusing mind.
I had a horrible teacher is an excuse I hear a lot on CC for poor AP scores. My kids each took AP Human Geography their freshman year. One had a really great teacher who gave them lots of practice tests and prepared them well and she also studied hard. She got a 5 on the test and a B in the class. The other had a crummy teacher and also did not study as much for the exam. She got an A in the class and a 4 on the exam. She could have not studied and just used the crummy teacher as an excuse and gotten a 2 or 3. I would not have had that kind of talk in my house, though.
@vickisocal
I took AP Physics in 10th grade which was also 1 of my first APs as well. I took 4 AP in 10th and AP physics 1 was the hardest out of them. The others were AP Art, AP World, and AP Bio. So please don’t bring your child story to make me feel less competent or bad.
I focused my studying time on the other AP more than Physics which eventually led to me getting a 2. And physics is one of the hardest course anyway. I got a 5 in world, art, and bio though.
Also AP human geography is one of the easiest ap and easiest to self study which is what I am gonna do since I haven’t taken that class yet. Again good for your children but please don’t use your child story to mine. If you wanna give advice then do so, but don’t make someone else feel bad.Thank you.
If you’re taking AP Geo for college admission, don’t. Adcoms know it’s an easy AP as well, stick to the standard APs if you can. And give yourself more free time! Good luck!
There is virtually no point in self studying AP’s.
I’m saying I hear “I had a bad teacher” as an excuse all the time and I don’t take it from my kids. You do your best and you don’t make excuses for your performance.
