AP scores

Could someone clear this up for me?
SO what exactly do AP scores do? I know they don't count towards GE... so is it ALL towards elective credit and placement?

Esp with tests coming up, how important is it that I do well on my six tests, esp with some i probably wont major in i.e. music theory etc?

Some AP tests such as Euro history or science may replace GEs. Otherwise, they are just for elective credit. You can graduate early if you have enough credits for major and choose you use AP credits.

depends on your major. in my case as an engineer, i was able to test out of a Category IV GE with US History, which other majors can't (the only such case i believe, actually). also, Calc AB moved me up a level in math, and Chem tested me out of the electrical engineering chemistry/materials science requirement. either the Bio or Chem test would have counted for my Category III GE (which is the case with any major). i should say though, that if you're a science or engineering major, you will usually by virtue of your major requirements get Category III out of the way. so in my case, i successfully tested out of 12 units of classes that i would have had to take at USC, almost a complete semester.

also...a very nice thing about AP credit that entering students don't really realize...if you just get a 3 on your tests, yes, it only counts for 4 elective units, but those units come in handy. the registration dates for the rest of your time at USC depend on how many units you have: the more units you have, the earlier you register, which means better chances at getting the classes you want. in my case, i came in with 32 units from AP tests...that didn't help for first semester registration, but it definitely helped for second semester, and it REALLY helped for my sophomore year registration...i was registering for classes on Monday morning while most of my friends were registering at least 3 days later and in some cases almost a week later, which is a HUGE difference. i got every professor that i wanted, and the best pick from the GEs.

Here's the list of credit you get at USC for AP exams-

Yea, my S is in engineering. He also got the 32 credits from AP exams & gets to register very early & gets pretty much the courses he wants at the times he wants. So far, he hasn't gotten out of many courses, but there are so many requirements for engineering anyway.
