I am a homeschooled sophomore, attending Calvert Academy, which is an online high school program. I take all the honors offered (which means 2/3 of my classes are honors (electives are, of course, regular). And I have tried to take all of the AP classes - but throughout the entire school, there are only three of those AP classes. Those are AP World History, AP Human Geography, and AP US History. I am taking AP World History this year, and plan to take the exam.
As I delve deeper into the whole college admissions process, I see how many AP’s have been taken by students - and how below that I am.
I learned about AP self-study and decided to try that. At the same time, I am also earning my Associate’s of General Psychology at a local college (the college credits DO NOT count towards my high school credits and do not affect my high school GPA).
But as any high school student, I have a lot of other things on my plate. Work, familial responsibilities, organizations, etc. Doing both AP self-study and these college classes takes up so much time and energy. Which would you choose?
Thank you!!
When you apply to selective colleges, they will want to see and evaluate the records of college courses you took in high school. For home schooled students, this can be helpful if you do well in those college courses, as they will provide some external validation of your home schooling.
Also, college courses that are not remedial (from a college viewpoint) cover similar or higher level material compared to AP courses, so they will show that you are able to handle college level material. In addition, they will show that you can handle actual college courses (with the greater demands for self-motivation and time management than typical high school (including AP) courses).
Yes, they are not remedial classes! So far my GPA at college is, I believe, 4.0. Thank you so much.
Yeah Dual Enrollment is way better than AP.
Honestly, APs can be 3x the work of an actual college course while delivering a quarter of the intellectual stimulation. Not to mention, if you get to know a professor well and they are impressed with you, then feel free to as for a letter of recommendation.
Also, with the whole credit thing, I would consider transferring to a different online school. Where I live, it is super easy to transfer. If its the same where you live, I would consider transferring in order to find a school that will accept your credits.
Thank you so much! This really helps. Yea, I enjoy the dual enrollment classes a lot.
