Hello,
Has anyone here already graduated from the AP Capstone Program?
I need some help. If you have, I have some questions to ask.
I didn’t complete the program (dropped AP Seminar recently), but I’m able to let you know my thoughts/experience if that would help!
Hi! I graduated from the AP Capstone program last year. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have!
I would like to ask how many people at your school were in Capstone and what the overall impression of it was. Thanks!
@carolinacatz For the first year AP Seminar was offered at my school (which I believe was the second year it was even offered nationwide), which was the year I took it, there were two classes of about 25-30 kids each in them. So roughly 50-60 students. About half of these students were seniors, who obviously would not have a chance to complete the diploma but were taking it for the invaluable college writing skills it taught. AP Research was not yet offered.
I was also among the first groups of students to take AP Research at my school. Because a number of students chose not to continue the program due to graduation or lack to interest, our group dropped down to about 15 students. It was really, really nice to have a small and tight-knit class to take it with.
I do know that way more students are taking both classes now. Like I said, we were the first group to take these classes, so our numbers were smaller.
Do you mean my personal impression or its reputation at my school? I can answer both.
I thought the program was incredible! They were definitely the classes that prepared me most for college. Because it was so new, some of the kinks were still being worked out, but I think that’s fixed by now. I really enjoyed being able to mostly research the topics that interested me, especially in AP Research. For example, the topics of yearlong research projects done by students in my AP Research class ranged from drone warfare to blood pressure/mental health to poverty in developing countries to LGBTQ acceptance at local high schools. You could really do anything of merit.
Another thing - it was an interesting thing to talk about on my college apps. I used the “Additional Info” section on Common App to explain - in brief - the program and most importantly, the yearlong research study that I was working on. It’s definitely most interesting than another random AP class.
If you have any other questions, let me know.
