AP Spanish help!

At my school, the Spanish department is WEAK...so, if I want to pass the AP test, I'll have to do it on my own. Does anyone have suggestions on how to self-study? I already have the Barron's AP Spanish prep book.

How are you all studying? Ie, vocabulary, grammar, etc.

Also, I'm taking 4 other AP classes, so I can't devote hundreds of hours to Spanish studying, which is why I'm looking for advice on the most effective methods.

Thanks!

Hmmm.. I got a 5 on the AP Spanish exam. Then again, I'm a native speaker. But before you start shaking your head, not all native speakers get 5s!! I can help you though. I'm not sure where you're strong and where you aren't. However, I recommend making sure you go over your verb tenses! Make sure you know the simple and complex tenses like the back of your hand. Be able to recognize them in context (which is helpful all over the test). Don't forget to devote extra attention to irregular cases (commit them to memory)! Study vocab but make sure you divide it into different topics. I know in the AP Book I had (I can't remember the name), it broke down the vocab into all different areas (like: animals, trees, professions/carreers, household items). It's usually best to have an ample vocabulary in many areas than to just memorize random words from all over the place. I'd also recommend practicing your writing and your speaking with your teacher after school. If you want, I'd be glad to critique your Spanish essays if you PM them to me. That's all the advice I have for now, though I suggest you carefully plan out how you're going to approach it all from now until May (I suppose a few hours a week would do the trick). Good luck to you! PM me if you need any help :)

Hello APDoolittle and billybobbyk. I don't mean to break into the conversation, but may I also do the same? I mean write essays and PM them to you? I'm taking AP Span. Lang. and I'm getting really worried as we get closer to the test. By the way, do you remember the book you used yet?

I'm a native speaker and APDoolitle is right, it is hard even for Native speakers. I am actually much more worried about this exam than I am for APUSH. I had to work hard to get a B+ in my AP Spanish Language class but you should buy "AP Spanish: Preparing for the Language Exam" by Jose M. Diaz. It is a great book and im almost sure its the one that AP Doolittle is refering to. My teacher calls it "La Biblia." Ironically, the hardest section for me is the speaking section, whereas the writing section is a breeze for me (in our in class practice essays i wrote 200 words in 20 minutes, less than half the allotted time on the AP test, as did my entire native-speakers class). The listening section is also hard for native-speakers because many are not used to hearing certain dialects and accents being spoken.(Good luck if the voice is that of a Cuban or Spaniard...) One note of the Jose Diaz book, the multiple choice error recognition and cloze sections no longer appear on the AP test (but they are good practice). As a result there are more free-response cloze sections (be sure to use accents correctly as they count as misspellings). The picture sequences will be on this year's exam but not the next. Good luck everyone

the speaking section was the hardest for me! I think non-native speakers need to practice this a lot so they feel comfortable on test day. We did an oral practice at least 3x a 6 wks.

We've done oral practice three times: twice with 20 second questions (though she never finished with our side of the room) and once with the two minute picture sequence. It's pretty much understood that non-native speakers at my school fail; I do not have high hopes. Last year, only one non-native speaker passed, and many of the native speakers, from what I understand, did not get 5's. I know one of them got a 4. I feel moderately hopeless, though, as we really don't cover things well. The curriculum was intended so that there would also be an AP Spanish VI, but they did away with that idea, so those of us who are juniors in AP Spanish V (most of our class) are basically screwed for the exam.

YES!! avseahawks that's the book! Wow, you're good! Haha and your Spanish teacher is right! That is "La Biblia" when it comes to AP Spanish prep. My class used that! As for your questions, Allornadara, avseahawks mentioned the same book I used, actually. It's called "AP Spanish: Preparing for the Language Exam." Check out reviews and such on Amazon: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/080131531X/sr=8-1/qid=1142210496/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7287196-5069719?%5Fencoding=UTF8%5B/url%5D">http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/080131531X/sr=8-1/qid=1142210496/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7287196-5069719?%5Fencoding=UTF8</a>
Oh, and Allornadara, feel free to PM me. I'd love to help, as long as I can find the time to. Good luck on the AP Spanish test everyone!

And Avseahawks, good luck on the APUSH. I recommend the AMSCO book called, "United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination." Here's the Amazon link: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1567656609/sr=8-1/qid=1142210750/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7287196-5069719?%5Fencoding=UTF8%5B/url%5D">http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1567656609/sr=8-1/qid=1142210750/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7287196-5069719?%5Fencoding=UTF8</a>
My class used that book! At this point, if you do decide to get it, I suggest revieweing 2 chapters per week and then when it gets closer to May, 1 chapter per night. I got the only 5 in my school with that book and this website: <a href="http://www.historyteacher.net/AHAP/AHAPCourseMainPage.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.historyteacher.net/AHAP/AHAPCourseMainPage.htm</a> which has quizzes at: <a href="http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm</a>
If you have any more questions about APUSH, PM me! Good luck!

There is a GREAT new book in the market. It is the most popular one. It is called A TODA VELA (by EMC). Have you seen it? It is getting excellent reviews! I love it because I learned a lot but at the same time it was not the typical dry material. The topics, readings,... where actually very interesting! I strongly recommend it! :-)

are you referring to the AP language?

I took it last year and I got a 5 and the listening part was hard

definitely what helped me most was that I'm a native speaker and I think that is the best way to study because the articles and audio parts are intended to be real life situations

so read, listen, watch real spanish. turn on your tv and commit yourself to watching like 30 min a day of a soap opera or the news in spanish; read spanish newspapers, etc

I'm asian (def not a native speaker) and got a 5 as well, so it is definitely possible to get a 5 even if you arent a native speaker either.

There's this book called "AP Spanish: Preparing for the Lang Exam" by Diaz and a grammar review workbook called "Una Vez Mas." I think those two books were key to my 5. I'm not a native speaker either.

Could you possibly give me some tips. KInd of give me like a study guide as far as the tenses go and the irregulars?
I would greatly appreciate it!!!
Thanks again!

sooo let’s just say my spanish isn’t the best; my listening is pretty bad, (i cannot catch on to spanish radio or television) and my speaking is not fluent. i’m planning -at least hoping- i can take Spanish 4 AP this year; what will I have to do to improve my listening and/or speaking? I know it’s not IMPOSSIBLE, but i need some confirmation— im kinda freaking out! please help! I know it’s a bit early, considering the year didn’t even start yet, but i don’t not want to walk in to Spanish 4 AP on the first day and … die.

I think i’m worrying too much- obviously, i do need to spend a lot of work. i just need some advice- tips? thanks.
