AP Stat or AP Bio

Since I started out with Geom as a freshman I'll have to double up in math one year to make it through the whole math progression (only goes through Calc AB and Stat). My counselors tell me I HAVE to take all the maths my school offers. The problem is I HATE math. I get pretty good grades A- or A usually but I just don't care about it at all. Instead of taking AP Stat as an elective I want to take AP Bio Junior year (will be doubling up with Physics, a requirement) and AP Chem Senior year. Will colleges really frown upon the fact that I didn't take 5 maths when I want to go into science?

Bump

Bumped after 6 minutes???

I only have AP bio at my school, I think you'll be better off with it, but then again I don't know what ap stat is all about and how useful it'll be.

I've taken AP bio during my junior year, and I am taking AP stats right now.
For me, AP stats is waaay easier than AP bio. AP stats is mostly interpretation of graphs. If you really want to take bio, be prepared to read and memorize A LOT. Since some colleges will see the senior schedule anyway, it doesn't really matter if you take bio or not, but it would be better to take ap bio if you're sure that you want to go into science.

depends on what your aspirations are

Take AP bio because:

a) Biology is a cornerstone of the big 3 sciences: chem, physics, bio,

b) AP Stats is generally considered less rigorous than AP Bio,

c) you're going into science, and

d) your counselor is a n00b.

So taking 5 maths with no interest in being a math major is probably not necessary?

I really don't think so. Unless you need a slot filled in your schedule and don't wan't to take an "easy" class, then 5 math's isn't really necessary (unless you want to go to HYPS or the like). AP Stats is an easy class though...mostly just simple graph interpretation, simple and more advanced probablity, etc. - I got a 4 on the test sophomore year. AP Bio is supposed to be a lot harder- more memorization, studying, etc.

So I guess the question you have to ask yourself is- Do I really hate math enough to not take Stats and take a harder class or would I rather take an easier class even though it is math?

Doesn't matter.

I really do want to have a fair shot at HYPS, though my main goal is Columbia.

You need to take AP Bio, AP Chem, and AP Calc.

Skip AP Stats unless you have free time for an elective your senior year.

Glad for the reassurance

It depends on what major you want to do in college in my opinion. But I'd choose AP Biology over math any day.

I'm now being told by counselors that AP Stat helps on the SAT so much that even though Bio is way harder, my SAT math score will completely make up for it if I take stats.

AP Stats is useful, but not challenging. It's really up to you. What interests you more? What do you want to major in?

I do want to go into science but is it true that it could enormously help my SATs?

^^^no. completely unrelated. ur counselor is messed up
