I'm currently a junior taking Calc AB and have to choose between AP stat or Calc BC next year. My dilemma is that I'm not really sure which to take. Teachers say statistics is good not only for math but also for other fields like business while others say taking Calc BC looks better for college and is more ideal if I want to pursue a science/math degree.

Personally, I'm okay with either and I think I can do well in both classes. I've also considered taking the stat course and self-studying for BC senior year. Would that be a good idea?

for those of you who've taken or are taking stat, do you guys think that statistics is important to take before going to college? or should I just try to finish the basic calc classes in high school?

I’d definitely say AP Calc BC. When you said taking a stat course and self-studying BC, I’d say that if you want to do both, do it the other way around. Take AP Calc BC and if you have time, self study AP Statistics. AP Statistics is a pretty easy subject to self study.

The more selective schools tend to want to see calc rather than stat. Since you have AB under your belt already, you would probably be fine doing stat senior year, but I would talk to your college counselor if you have a good one.
Ignoring the admissions question - stat is really good to have, and it makes a lot of sense to do that during high school. If you go into math/science/engineering, you’ll be taking more math in college and probably you will have to pass college specific tests to place into math anyway.

If you are going into sci/math/eng etc., go with BC; you will take a real (i.e., calculus-based) stats course in college anyway and AP stats will generally not be honored for credit.
