My D wants to take AP Stat next year instead of Calc, she is interested in polictics, law etc, and feels this will be more in line with her goals

She has taken three years of math already- alg, geo, precalc...and AP STAT will be her 6th AP class

Just double checking (I know it is a dumb question :( )

technically its math

in the strictest sense statistics should probably be called a mathematical science rather than a branch of mathematics. in the world outside university math and statistics departments youre not even going to have an argument on this minute differentiation, however. so yes, for your daughtors purposes, statistics is math.

if she is considering majoring or minoring in economics, id suggest she take calculus. but statistics is definitely a very useful course for all social science majors, so it certainly wouldnt be a waste in that regard. the only real negative (aside from not learning calculus for the sake of learning it, a true shame in my book) is that statistics it is an easier course and wont look quite as good on a college application.

better question than you thought!

yes statistics is technically NOT math. But theres numbers so close enough haha

i think it's considered reasoning in college

my friend told me that if i got credit for my AP test for stats i won't have to take basic reasoning in college or something like that

I know a student who is planning to major in economics who decided against taking AP Statistics because, basically, it's the wrong type of statistics course.

AP Statistics is statistics without calculus. Econ majors, and others with a serious need for statistics, usually take a more sophisticated statistics course in college that uses calculus and that has calculus as a prerequisite. AP Statistics cannot substitute for that course.
