I know that this has probably been exhaustively discussed in the past here on CC, but I'd just like to know whether I would be better off taking an AP statisitics my senior year, or a regular Calculus

Calculus. If you study a little more outside of class and you'll be able to at least take the AB test.

I suspect calc would be looked upon as more challenging, even though it's not AP. Calc is tough, AP or not. Stats is a useful class, IMO, but I think admissions people prefer to see the student taking on the challenge of calc.

My son took both as a senior. He did NOT take the AP test after taking regular Calc. They were not prepared specifically for the test. He had a terrible Stat teacher and managed a terrific 2 on the AP. His math-whiz roommate got a 1.
Anyway- I would say Calculus.

In the scheme of things...Calculus will be a better choice. I gather neither Calculus AB nor BC is not offered as an AP course at your school. If not, you may wish to talk to your schools administration to see if it could be offered next year instead of STATs AP.

Oh AP Calculus is offered, however I was kind of forced into algebra as a frosh, and the fartherst that I could manage to to math-wise, while still keeping room for other courses, is regular calc or ap stats

Statistics may be the better choice for those planning on a business major; Calculus is required, typically, for engineering types. Often math whizzes experience more difficulty with Statistics-in my very limited experience-than with calculus.

My understanding...Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II-Trig, you have finishied-Fresh-Jun Yr...now your choices are:Math Anaylsis, Calculus, AP Stats or AP Calculus AB...correct?? You obviously would be challenged if you took the AP Cal under that scenario...but...let me ask you...does your math teacher think you are up to that challenge??? Do you think you are up to that challenge???
I ask because it is doable with hard work...what do you think???

Bug your counselor about it, try to get in.

Well, I think that you misunderstood, calc is required before going on to ap in my particular highschool, this is more of a scheduling problem as I can only fit in one or the other

oh, it might also be helpful to know that my school has a 4x4, switch classes halfway through the year sort of system, so while I could go for AP calc, it would require me to cancel something else, like AP gov, or AP spanish

I don't understand why your school requires calc before AP calc. Seems like overkill to me. D took algebra in 9th, geom in 10th, algebra 2 & also trig in 11th. Currently taking AP calc ... whole class (and the other AP calc classes) taking calc for first time as AP.

I would suggest taking AP calc rather than AP government. Unless you need the social studies credit to graduate, I think it's far less useful (in terms of college admissions) than AP calc. Just my opinion!

No Precalculus class- from Algebra 2 to Calculus? At even other people's schools as well, it seems.

Oy.

She took alg. 2 for a year, and she took trig/precalc class for a semester --- both junior year. She had to do this, because she had to take alg. 1 in 9th (public middle school --- integrated math). She is a strong math student, so wanted to take AP calc. That's why she doubled up jr. year. Lots of kids at her school do that (one advantage of a school with 8 class periods).

well, I'm hestitant to invest so much of my time in math because A. I want to major in international relations, and B. Math is both my least favorite class, and my worst academically

the strange thing is that the math path goes as follows: algebra, honors/reg geometry, honors/reg algebra II, pre-cal, calc, ap calc. I always thought that this was the normal route, but after reading your posts, I'm starting to think otherwise....

simpson:

is "calc" at your school the rough equivalent to Calc AB? [After precalc, that's the next logical step.]

btw: AP Gov is not even recognized for credit at many highly selective colleges.

yes, calc is considered the next logical step after precal, and AP gov isn't necessary for credit in my school, in fact you must complete the required number before taking it. I was looking to take it less for the college credit and more for the way its looked upon for certain majors

My D took AP Stat. best decision she ever made...she is doing political science...and took AP Gov, Econ, two english classes, one an AP, and history class, etc= she took classes that were inline with her goals- if she had taken Calc again (after pre-calc) she would have been miserable and her other grades would have suffered...and for what...to follow a track that people say is necessary- or o to take that fourth year of math in an area much more relavent to her interests and be able to really shine in her other classes...I thought she made the best decision for her...and she got into two schools EA...her conselour was pushing Calc, but my D was ademat about her wants, and she has had a great senior year

She looked at colleges in her areas of interest and NOT taking Calc, she had taken precalc, was just fine with them

If you have a strong schedule, and do well in the other classes, not taking Calc, and instead taking AP Stats should be fine

Just be sure you have other challenging classes

and SO WHAT if colleges don't take a class for credit like AP Gov, many colleges are restricting the number of AP credts they are accepting anyway, so if it is towards you goal and it interests you, take it

look at the posts about that...http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=293765
