This year (Junior) I made the mistake of taking AP Statistics instead of Precalculus honors. Freshman year I took Geometry honors and Sophomore year I took Algebra 2/ Trig honors. I am going to take AP Calculus AB next year. I am wondering to what extent will I be at a disadvantage when applying to top 20 schools next year. The rest of my resume is fine (35 ACT, top 4%, decent EC's etc.) but I worry that for schools like Duke and Georgetown, this weak "math class" may hurt my chnaces of admission. To what degree is this true? Could someone shine some light on the subject? Thanks!

Umm, im in Honors Pre-Cal and my teacher has told us constantly this year that from the beginning he has been preparing us for the AP Cal exam next year (best teacher i've ever had). The fact that Stat is an AP class helps, but i've heard it's a joke. I guess it all depends on how well you do in AP Cal... good luck.

yes, you may be at some disdvantage

I doubt the class itself with hurt you too much...it is an AP as opposed to honors precalc, after all. But as has been mentioned, you may be at a disadvantage going into calc class. As long as you're prepared for that, and make good grades in it, I think you're fine.

well at least u took trig, thats second semester of pre-calc right there

I actually did something similar. I took AP Stat this year instead of AP Calculus. Though I had pre-calc last year, I am a bit worried about going it AP Calc...but I'm jumping right into AP BC Calc. I recommend you do the same. It isn't that big of a deal, looks good on college apps, and the first semester is just an AB review, anyway. That definitely makes up for the "lost" year of a strenuous math class.

AP Statistics is an advanced placement class, which is fine instead of Honors Pre-Calculus. In terms of Calculus AB, you may be at a slight disadvantage, but because it's AB, you really should have no problem. For admissions, I really doubt this could be much of a problem...unless you want to major in math. My friend received a C in Calculus BC, and got a Likely Letter from Duke (this is just an example though, so take it with a grain of salt).

P.S. barberconcerto, I love your username :).

I actually thought stats was going to be a breeze, and while I do well in it is not nearly as easy as I thought it would be.

Um, if you didnt take Precalculus and you took AP Statistics instead, how are you taking AP Calculus AB next year? At my school you MUST have taken Precalculus to take AP Caclulus AB or BC. AP Statistics is a good class, but I dont think you should be taking AP caclulus anyway...but if you are gonna take it then good luck. And Precalculus is more difficult than AP Statistics, even though that is an AP class and collleges recognize that. Why you took it I am not really sure....

I'm also taking AP Stats and thought it would be easy...which it is...but relative to precalculus or trig, I think it's about the same in difficulty

Well oboe at my school I can take Calc AB and that is what I'm going to do. I don't know why I wouldn't want to take Calculus of some sort before getting to college?
