AP statistics???

I’ve 5 AP classes so far and I plan to take more 4 next year. Math has always been my worst subject, but I can make an A in it. Currently I take trigonometry at my community college. I plan to study in an arts and science college at a university. I’ve been planning on not taking a math class at all next year. Is it worth taking AP Statistics just to give myself a leg up against other students taking AP Calculus when applying to college?

No admissions officer will think AP Stat is the equivalent of AP Calc but IMO it is better than taking no math at all senior year.

I know that ap stats not the equivalent of ap calc. Thanks for the advice.

Statistics is not the same as math. Instead, it demands problem solving, analyzing numerical data and deciding whether accumulated information answers specific questions. Statistics enables students to recognize when, why, and how well information supposedly derived from research really answers questions.

Another consideration: most elite colleges don’t give credit for AP stats

There is no way I am taking AP calc, I’m just taking stats for a math credit. I am going to be a journalism major so I guess stats will probably help me out more than calc would. The colleges I’m looking at are mid-range, not Ivies.

I would take a “college level” Statistics course at your community college, as opposed to AP Statistics. If you got credit for AP Statistics at the undergraduate level, a number of graduate programs will not honor your AP Statistics credits and require you to do over that course to meet their program requirements. That will not be the case if you did the “college level” Statistics class at your CC (at CC campus).

If you aren’t going to take calculus, I think AP Stat sounds like a good option for you.

Is there a non-AP level calc class you can take? Our school offers Calc honors in addition to AP Calc.

No, basically seniors run out of options for math if they don’t take ap calc at my school.

So some schools don’t count AP Stats as “math.” (See Wisconsin) So make sure you otherwise have the 4 years of math you need to get into those schools. In my kid’s case, he ran out of HS math – the HS courses he took in middle school show on his transcript to get him the 4 years.

In our school, AP Stats in considered the hardest course in the school.

AP calculus AB is a slower pace version of calculus, so it will be a more gentle introduction to it than a calculus course in college.

Statistics is probably generally more useful than calculus for a journalist. However, some may want a more in depth understanding of statistics and may want to take a calculus based statistics course in college.

I’ve decided on taking stats. I’ll talk to my counselor on whether I should take it AP or DE. Thanks for everyone’s advice.

“In our school, AP Stats in considered the hardest course in the school.”

In our school, it’s considered one of the easiest AP classes offered. You never know.

Calculus is the hardest at my school because of the teacher, so I guess is varies.

I had the same teacher for calc and stay but stat is a lot harder for me… I guess cause it’s more about wording and memorization than actual calculations
