I've posted before about self-studying for AP Psych and Macro, but I also want to take the AP Stats exam. I couldn't fit the class into my schedule, but I still want to take the exam. Is it possible for me to get a 5 on the exam if I self study? My friend gave me last year's 5 Steps to a 5 book and a cartoon guide to statistics. If I start studying now, or withing the next few weeks, what will I need to do in order to get a 5 on the exam?

I’m taking AP Stat right now and I find it pretty hard, but I think it’s because of my teacher. The topics are pretty easy to cover, but there’s a lot of them. My teacher’s tests are extremely hard but the AP Exam is just basics. I think you can get a 5 on the exam given the fact that you give yourself 3-4 months for preparation. I have Barron’s right now, and it’s the “hardest” prep book out there, 5 Steps to a 5 is pretty good because it covers the basics. I think you’re able to do it, goodluck!

Thanks! Should I ask the teacher at my school for a textbook? Also, does it suffice to get books from the library rather than buying them?

Thispakistanigir, are you saying that it’s legit hard or the teacher just grades harshly? Are the concepts easy to understand?

If you borrow books from the library, you’re going to have to return them eventually. So I suggest buying a book. I bought a used textbook for about $12 on half.com. Ccers recommended The Practice of Statistics. And my school uses that textbook too.

It’s really not hard to understand, I just have the misfortune of getting a teacher who tries to teach us third year statistics (she’s like a big statistics buff who writes books about it…). You won’t have a hard time understanding the concepts though. Definitely get the book. My books is the Practice of Statistics 2nd edition, though I hear the 3rd edition’s even better.

I also recommend The Practice of Statistics which my school uses. I believe the concepts in statistics are easy enough to self-study as long as you learn how to word your free response answers. I say that Barron’s as a “hard” prep book is a good supplement because it’ll make sure you’re ready for the test. Good luck.
