AP stats sophomore year before precalc? Help!

Hello, my son is a freshman and is completing Math III this year(our district has renamed the math courses but it basically means he’s done algebra 1 and 2 and geometry by the end of this year.). Next year, the school recommends he take AP stats and then precalc his junior year. I’m concerned with this recommendation. It seems odd to interrupt the sequence for AP stats. I’ve heard from some parents who say waiting to take precalc leads some kids to struggle. They forget many of the things they need since they had a year of stats and weren’t using the algebraic skills. I’ve also heard this could mean more prep before ACT and SAT since some of the material won’t be as fresh since they spend the 10th grade year in stats.
The only pros for taking AP stats before precalc that I’ve heard are:
Won’t have as long without calc before taking it in college
New SAT includes some stats questions so could be helpful
And
Some HS classes require stats (physics)

I’m wondering what most students due in this situation.
Thank you for your advice!!

Personally, I’d either wait until after Calc/pre-calc to take Stats or take stats as well as another math class some year. Interrupting alg 2. and pre-calc will make pre-calc a lot harder, but interrupting pre-calc and calc isn’t too bad since not much of pre-calc is actually used in calc.
edit: but if waiting to take stats will jeopardize his tracks in other subjects (e.g. not being able to take physics when he wants to) i’d take it right now, since ultimately having to wait an extra year, or not even be able to take a class you want to is more drastic than having a slightly harder time adjusting to pre-calc.
