Hey guys, I just received my schedule, and am very disappointed with my AP Lit class. All of my friends are in a period with the teacher I wanted, while I know absolutely nobody in my class, with a teacher I don't care for. After looking through my schedule, I realized the one way to switch into the Lit class I want would be to drop stats.

I originally wanted stats for an easy 5 and to show colleges that I took a math senior year. If I drop it, however, I will also have room to put Advanced Topics in Calculus in my schedule (basically Calc 3/Multivariable Calc). How would this look to colleges if I didn't take stats, but took an equally difficult math course? At my school they are weighted the same.

Also, does anyone have any advice from taking an advanced calc class in high school? I enjoyed Calc BC last year and got a 5, so I hope I would be alright in this class, but I'm not sure how difficult it is (only 1-3 students each year usually take it at my school).

Sorry for the long-winded post, thanks in advance for any help! :)

. The rigor of the class matters more than it being an AP. I hear Stats is thought of as an easier AP, while mv calc will prepare you for further calculus courses in college especially if you major in engineering or the sciences.

I think the (non-calculus based) AP Stats would be a waste of time for you. The adv. topics class will be more challenging but much more impressive on the transcript.

Do Multivariable Calc. I did it last (sophomore) year and got straight A’s. Fun class, better than stats which I self studied in a week and got a 5. Stats will bore you out of your mind.

Another related question: will multivar help me with my Physics C work? Or is the calc in Physics C limited to that which is taught in Calc BC?

And as far as stats goes…am I missing anything important? I don’t want to be out of the loop when I get to college as far as my math base goes, but from what I’ve heard you don’t learn too much in AP stats to begin with…

For Physics C you just need to know how to integrate and derivatize (yes, it’s a fun word; get used to it) your basic functions. You learn everything you need and more in AB. You’re definitely not missing out on anything by skipping stats. The stats exam is a joke and the entire class is really boring since there isn’t really much to teach. The curriculum is really short and you could learn it by yourself pretty easily if you wanted to. Stats is also completely useless for higher math classes, even if you’re planning to take higher stats classes. As someone mentioned before, AP stats doesn’t prepare you at all for calculus-based stats; it only teaches the basics, which could be learned in a week in your higher class.

Well I saw my guidance counselor today and switch into multivariable calc… so much for stats! And I’ll be in an awesome English class… which I’m excited about :)

Thanks for all the help everyone; I’m sure I’ll be back on this forum with calc problems I can’t figure out later this year :P
