Hi GUYS. I am attempting to break the 23 AP exam record at my HS by taking 24, considering all AP exams, I can take 21 "academic" courses, the others are either languages or physics(dont plan on taking it haha). To get to 24 I would have to take:
AP Studio Art
AP Studio Design 2-D
AP Studio Design 3-D
(in addition to the 21 academic courses)
My question is, how exactly do they work? Would I mail them my art? Would I need to be enrolled in a class to do so? Can I even "salef-study" them?(meaning i do them w/out the class).

Also I am very fluent in Spanish, and people have told me that Spanish and Italian are strikingly similiar so I am thinking of taing Italian 1,2, & 3 at a local CC to pass it. Doable to pass AP Italian?

Also Im a sophomore I want to take AP English this year so I don't have to worry about it in my most important year: 11th grade. Can I even study for it? Or can I already get a 5 as long as im good at english?

Sorry for the long post, will enjoy and be grateful of any replies! Thanks!

I WOULD NOT recommend taking all 3 AP arts in one year unless you have loads of free time.
Only AP 2D and AP Drawing require you to send in 5 physical works per portfolio [dimension requirements are on the AP site]

AP 3D is generally ~ 18 pieces … any type of sculpture. Found objects, mixed media, ceramics, metal work, wood work, paper … etc
AP 2D is generally ~ 20 - 24 pieces … any type of 2D work [digital or traditional] Can be photography, typography…etc but should be DESIGN focused.
AP Drawing is ~20-24 pieces . No digital work. Can include paintings and drawings of almost any type.

You can self study it. I “self-studied” AP Drawing. You need a portfolio case from AP to send in the pieces though.

@ViTong4:Thank you ViTong4! I really appreciate it! That was very helpful! But could you please clarify a couple of things for me? When you say that I require a portfolio case, what exactly is that(im sort of confused)? Also the submission that are done online are they works of art that I did online ? or photos of physical works i did? (e.g. a picture of a sculpture/real life painting) that i submit online? I love art and I’m pretty good at it but I wouldn’t say exceptional…could I still get a 5 as long as I put decent effort? Sorry for so many questions. THANKYOU AGAIN SO MUCH!!! =3

Your schedule looks pretty solid, congratulations! All of the above courses are, in my opinion, self study-able. From what I’ve heard for an easy AP subject you should get the two best review books for it and you’ll be fine. For the subjects you have trouble with you should consider getting more review books or maybe even a textbook. While APs are good, be sure not to lag behind in areas like ECs and sports.

Each AP portfolio has three parts : Quality, Concentration, Breadth

Breadth and Concentration are all SUBMITTED digitally. Meaning that you take photos of your work and upload them onto an AP studio art account.

For AP 3D, Quality [5 pieces] is also submitted digitally. However, for 2D and Drawing, the quality sections [also 5 pieces each] are submitted physically. You request special paper portfolios from AP Central and they have boxes and that fun stuff to fill out. You then send the portfolio sometime before your AP test date to be graded.

Only 2D takes actual digital work [CG painting, digital photography… etc. … NO VIDEOS]

Sorry, but if you are “pretty good” you’re guaranteed a 3 … If you work really hard, you COULD get a 5 … it’s unlikely though.

The art student inside me is kinda upset you think you can get a 5 with “decent effort” …
I was the only one in my class that got a 5 last year… and those were some pretty talented kids in my class.

Plus, I have no scale on what “pretty good” is.

@bluestar1398: Thankyou for the insight I really appreciate it! And your right about the Art classes!haha oh and I do plan on takin the AP Chem class for sure and all a good amount that Iposted there as well, Thanks again!

@ViTong4: Im really sorry, I would get upset as well, but what I meant is that I like drawing and I consider myself good and many of my Art teachers like my drawings as well, but I’ve seen examples on CollegeBoard of 5’s on AP Art and they are really amazing and they scare me off(in the fact that they’re intimidatingly beautiful); that’s why I asked if I could still get a 5 but I incorrectly used the word “decent” I mean with my best effort but I still doubt it wouldn’t come near to the ones on CollgeBoard. I don’t have any current examples unfortunatley but I could send you a picture of one once I’m done. Do pictures that I have done online count? Thank you ViTong4 foryour insightful info! =3 Hope to hear from you soon.

rfav32, if by “pictures I have done online”, you mean CG [computer Graphics] pictures, 3D renders, photomanipulations… etc, those are OK for 2D design only.

AP Art has so many guidelines… be sure to follow them! especially when photographing your pieces or saving files of your digital pieces. The AP readers want certain size files [they specify dimensions too].

If you have other questions, you can ask me about it. I’ve taken 3D [4] and self-studied Drawing [5] … i’m familiar with digital art software … but I decided not to take 2D this year just because I wanted to work on my own portfolio instead of an AP portfolio.

I’ve also taken Chem [5], APUSH [5], AP eng language [5], Chinese [5]

For english, as long as you can write essays quickly and well, you’re pretty well off. There’s also the multiple choice section. Take lots of practices to get familiar with writing from different time periods and the time limit you have for the section.
