Can the school do this? Son paid the $13 deposit so I just gave him the check for the balance to take the AP Stats test tomorrow and he said it was the wrong amount and he has to pay $95, not $89. This doesn't seem right?! Do your schools charge more than the $89 it ways on the college board website? I'm afraid that if I don't give him more they won't let him take the test tomorrow-yikes!

I think part of the fee goes to the school for administering the test. It is up to the school how much it wants to charge for the fee.

This says the school already gets $8 per test and son has 5 tests so that “extra” adds up and doesn’t seem legit to me! Just wondering if everyone else paid more or the $89 per test?

it was $102 at my school

Our school charges $100 per test, but we may pay more because the exams aren’t given at the school. All the area high schools pool together and give exams at a large independent facility. Other area schools are charging extra as well, so probably have to pay something to rent the facility.

College board has rules that regulate circumstances under which schools can charge extra. You should contact college board if you think you are being overcharged without good reason. But probably pay so he can take the test, since it’s too late to get an answer before tomorrow.

Thank you, I guess we have no choice but to pay their extra “bonus” fee. Grrr. Better to know now then for him to walk in and be denied tomorrow. What a rip off! He is a senior, already knows where he is going for college and won’t get the AP credit but the HS drops the grade one full level if the kids don’t take the AP test.

My daughter is taking 5 AP’s this year. We didn’t have to pay anything. I guess our school district foots the bill. Is this unusual?

no, some schools are able to and decide to cover the costs for the students

I hate paying the fees, but our schools don’t seem to have any money. -Though they will start giving ACTs at no cost to all juniors starting next year!

Exams are optional in our high school but some teachers allow you to opt out of class final if you take the AP exam, to encourage taking the AP exam. They allow kids to cancel up until the day before the test and recover $77 per test, which is useful for seniors. Kids have to sign up for tests before they are certain where they are attending. One of D’s exams will not get her anything really at her college, so she cancelled it.

Wow, I’m jealous of your $95 fee…with the administrative costs and stuff, I ended up paying $115 per exam.

It’s 6 dollars. Chill.

I know it’s only $6 but he has 5 or 6 APs so it adds up but mostly, it seemed to be unethical when there is already an $8 fee built in for schools and they are held at the school. I don’t mind paying either if he could get college credit but it looks like he only gets credit for one of the tests so IMHO it’s a waste of ~$500!

Those fees are ridiculous! Our school charges $39 with a one time $3 administration fee, and we go to a special testing center.

Do you have to pay the administration fee for every test?

It’s not a waste as your son’s grades won’t drop a letter grade. Don’t worry about something you can’t control; there is no point.

It’s $105 per test at my school. It’s still worth it though, as I’ll probably end up saving a semester’s tuition in college…

I have $157 per test. I’m in India though… -_-

The fee should be set before registration. It is always $100 per AP for my D’s school. The higher cost is due to the test center charges which vary from school to school. All kids in my school district go to the same local state university for the test. It may be expensive, but I don’t see a reason for complaining.

Wow this is absolutely crazy. They make you pay $95 just so your grade won’t drop? Something’s definitely wrong here.

Public school… At our schools they charge large fees per sport. There is an annual family max for sports charges. They should have something like that for AP tests too, annual family max $400 or something.

our school charges $110
