Well I signed up for Calculus 1 this fall semester even though I took it as an AP class in 12th grade. Now that I have my AP score, which is a 5, I am definitely wanting to take Calculus 2 instead. But I am not sure that is possible to do when drop/add rolls around Aug 1st. Is it??
I heard MAC2311 at UF is ridiculously hard and basically weeds everyone out even those with a strong background in the subject. But then again I am afraid that going into Calculus 2 without a college level Calculus 1 will murder me.

When I went to preview, my advisor told me to email her if I wanted to change into Calc 2 before drop/add came around. Maybe you could email your preview advisor and see if they can help you?

Skip Calc 1 fasho

why do you say that?

Why wouldn't you?

yea i emailed my advisor from preview and the advising people and they got back to me relatively fast. I just don't know which class is better MAC2312 or MAC2512. 2512 is an overview of calc 1 material before calc 2, but that leaves you with less time to learn the calc 2. So idk

i took mac2512 and it was pretty great. are you a math major? i mean, unless you are going to be going to the levels of math like diff eq and linear algebra, you will never need the stuff you learn in calc 2 anyway. even if you will need those classes, by the time you take them, you will have forgotten most of calc 2 stuff in either case. I really enjoyed mac2512. the guy who teaches it is pretty cool.

definitely skip calc 1, because the college level is NOT fun. its just a weed out class and made terribly difficult when it doesnt need to be.

so calc 2 isn't hard? I got a 4 on AP Calc AB so I get credit for MAC2311, but I put MAC2311 for my fall math class. I'm at UF right now for Summer B...what should I do?

I suggest MAC 2512. The teacher teaching it this fall is pretty good. He's very easy and tells you what kind of questions to expect on the tests. Mind you, I had him for Diff Eq, but if his teaching style is unchanged that's what to expect from him.

General consensus from what I've seen is if you can skip Calc 1, do it.

I got a 4 in Calc AB too, but I didn't want to go into MAC 2512 because the people at preview said that graduate schools don't really accept/like AP credit. I'm a microbiology major so I don't need Calc 2 (I don't think..) so should I just stick to MAC 2311? And also, is MAC 2512 Calc 2 for AP students? What does that mean really? Like would we go over some Calc 1 topics AND Calc 2?

Love23, yes that is basically what 2512 is.

It'sGr822BeAGator, who is the teacher?

http://www.math.ufl.edu/~fgarvan/cgi-bin/schedule_csh.cgi?sem=f&yr=2008&submit=GET+LIST
I'm sure you can find out for yourself from here on.

Yes, I know about that, and I know it is currently Shen, but I was asking who you had becasue that list may not be the same as it was for when you had the professor...it's not that I was lazy to look.

Also, it has Edwards for my MAC2311 that I tentatively registered and after e-mailing Bruce he said he wasn't scheduled to teach that lecture, so there is some discrepancy between now and when classes begin...

I didn't take Calc 2 or Calc 2 for AP students at UF. In my last post I was referring to Shen, because I had him for DiffEq last spring.

Hmm...some of my friends are taking Calc 2 at their local community college over the summer (next year). Is that something I should do? I'm still in a debate with myself to determine if I want to do MAC2311 or MAC2512 (since I got a 4 on the AP Calc AB test)...

I would take 2512 or 2312. Look at ratemyprofessors.com

What is your reasoning?

I'm thinking s/he means that the professors for calc1 are more difficult than they need to be, since it's essentially a weed-out class

when i went to preview and we split off to do the seperate majors lecture thing, i went to the engineering one, and the woman there said that due to the fact that engineering is very math heavy that even if you get a 5 on AP calc (which i did) you should still take calc 1 (so i signed up for it). is anyone else here going to major in engineering? if so, what do they think of this advice?

I'm majoring in Computer Engineering and was told the same crap. Honestly, they can't speak for everyone, so they are generalizing. It doesn't matter what major one chooses, if it has Analytic Geometry and Calculus I, II, III I don't see how it is any more or less math intensive than another major outside of engineering that wants calculus like that...
