AP Test Scores in Admission FAQ

I’m still seeing posts in other threads indicating that AP scores aren’t considered for admission. A look at the Common Application will provide a reality check on that.

I self-reported all my AP test scores on the commonapp, but a friend of mine said that alot of colleges like official AP test score reports, which of course I didn’t send b/c I thought self-reporting them was good enough. So did I screw up? But I’ve seen some posts that say self-reporting in your application was good enough so I don’t really know what to believe now. Does anyone perhaps know of a post that lists colleges that want you to send official AP scores along with your app?
I applied to:
Marist
Ithaca
Tulane
Rhodes
Rice
Brown
By the way it costs $15 for EACH college that you send AP scores to so that also makes me doubt that you need to send official AP scores, but then again collegeboard makes you pay $10 per college for SAT scores so you never know…

I’ve not heard of many colleges that expect official AP test score reports in the admission process. If none of the application forms you filled out, or their instructions, told you to send official score reports, you are just fine.

Thanks so much for easing a little of my anxieties, it’s just that when I think I’ve got all my stress under control I suddenly come up with all these ideas on how I could’ve screwed up my applications. I can’t wait till acceptance/rejection letters come, no matter what results I get at least I won’t be plagued by this anxiety anymore.

i reported all my scores, including a 2. so far, it doesnt seem to have affected my admissions at all (i got deferred (ivy league school), but i was expecting to get deferred/rejected anyway)

I applied to very competitive schools (five ivies and seven similarly-ranked ones) but I’m nervous about my SAT II scores (710 Math 2, 680 Lit, 660 Physics), especially Lit, since I’m applying as an English major. Do you think colleges will maybe look past the Sat II’s since I got 5’s on all three of the AP tests I took – BC Calc, English Language (it’s more my thing than lit), and U.S. Gov? I’m just shaking in my boots for RD…

AP scores may help if they are in the same subject as your SAT Subject Test scores. Probably each college views this issue a little differently.

What if you list most of the AP scores, but not all? Will colleges like Cornell look down on that? How severely does it hurt for not writing down all your scores? Is it like the worst thing you can do?

I’m sure it’s not the WORST thing you could do, but my advice to applicants I know is just to list all the scores.

so they would prefer the candidate who listed all their scores to candidates who listed only a few scores?

I think it might depend on just how many scores you left off. If it’s just like one I can’t see how it would matter, but if you left off like 3 I don’t think colleges would look kindly on that. Unless, you made a 0 or 1 I don’t think it would look bad for you to put it there in the first place.

I just realized that I did not send any of my AP scores…

is it too late to send it now?

do AP scores matter in admissions?

No AP Scores do not matter too much in admissions, but they can help choose if you can select to skip intro courses.

…More so to verify the scores you reported. If you did well, high scores reiterate the quality of the courses you took on a standard level. You likely can still submit, more likely if you rush them (but its expensive) so that they will still be considered in the admissions process…I would still send them even if they arent considered for the decision, but so you can still get credit.

I thought there might be a thread like this but if there is I can’t find it. I applyed for colleges through the commonapp and put my AP test scores on it. I know that to send official AP test scores you call collegeboard and have them do it for $15 a school. However, I thought you only send in official scores once you’ve been accepted to attend the school and want college credit hours from them! I know that your scores are a part of the admission decision, and I thought reporting them on your commonapp was good enough, but now I’m hearing that I may have had to send official scores! Does anyone have any information on whether this is true??? I also took a dual credit class at my local community college over the summer should I have sent that school’s transcript as well??? I did put on the commonapp that I took the class and got credit though. I’ve applied to Rice, Tulane, Allegheny, Marist, Ithaca, and Rhodes if that helps.

My D did not send official AP scores at the time she applied. She sent in the official ones after she was admitted. Just like you, she hand-wrote them on the commonapp last year.

You ONLY need to send official AP scores to the school where you MATRICULATE.

Under Colleges and Universities, the CA states: “Please have an official transcript sent from each institution as soon as possible”. So send it ASAP.

I just called a few schools and 5/7 said that if I want my AP test scores to be considered in my application evaluation that they need official test scores. 3/5 said that it was okay if my scores were on the back of my transcript, and if not, it was okay to have my counselor fax them. The other 2 said to send my AP scores through collegeboard. So I’m sorry to say that things must have changed and you no longer send them if you’re going to matriculate. Everyone who’s worried about this needs to CALL each college and ask them about this. B/c one of the colleges I called did say you only need to send them if you matriculate but the majority said I need to send them.

Which five colleges?

Marist, Ithaca, Tulane, Rhodes, and Allegheny. But really I’m thinking a lot of colleges are the same. Rice was the only one I called that said they didn’t need it, and I didn’t even ask Brown b/c that’s such a reach I’m contemplating not bothering to pay $15 for scores. Also, I have to use rush delivery $25 per college b/c the application deadlines for so many of these schools have passed. I really think no kids who are applying realize all this. I wish collegeboard, with all the money they squeeze out of kids could afford to send students emails informing of them of things like this. And I really don’t understand why AP scores can’t be sent with SAT scores, after all, subject test scores are. I’m just really mad at myself and collegeboard right now. But mostly myself.
