Hey everyone. I am a sophomore in high school, and have become very interested in math recently. I feel my math class (Algebra 2) is too easy, however, my school does not let us test out of math classes. I wanted to take the AP Calc test this year through self study. My counselor told me this was a bad idea because colleges would look at my classes and think that I stopped doing math after Alg. 2. I feel I can pass the test after I study, but now I am doubting if I should take it.

What do you guys think?

Depends on the college or university, though math and foreign language are the two subjects where passing a course or an AP test in a higher level is most likely to be accepted as fulfilling the lower levels.

You do realize that to have a chance of succeeding on the AP calculus test, you will have to learn algebra 2, trigonometry/precalculus, and at least a semester of calculus on your own, right?

If calculus is offered at your school, why not wait? At least wait another year to take the test as you have learned more math. This year may be easy for you, so take advantage of it. Do lots of ECs or something else that is awesome.
