My D was unable to get AP psych next year due to a scheduling conflict. Can she take the AP exam without taking the course? I realize the course won't show up on her transcript, but if she gets a 5 on the exam she can skip intro to psych in college.

Yes, self-studying APs is a common practice. Just make sure she signs up in time (around February-March).

Also, many CCers will tell you that AP Psych is one of the best APs for self-studyers to undertake!

this method is called “self study”.

Yup, I would HIGHLY recommend it. It shows you are very motivated and have a lot of other positive qualities. AP exams aren’t easy so if you can self study for one and pass it then that shows alot to an admissions counselor.

Thanks everyone!

Self studying AP Psychology… I speak from personal experience when I warn you to not start reading the Barron’s book the weekend before the test (heck, even then… I ended up with a 4 with just that one weekend of torture).

Actually, I don’t know about other people, but I took 7 self studied ap tests which I just read the review book for the night before each one and I got straight 5s. So it’s entirely possible. I even knew the information better than those who took the class because I remembered the things they learned months ago that I only learned the night before.

^^^ Which AP’s CercaTrova?

CercaTrova, I’m doing that this year too.
So far, I’ve destroyed AP Psych, AP Stats and AP Comp Gov. Pretty sure I’m going to do the same with AP Human Geo as well.

Yes – AP Psychology is considered one of the easier exams to self-study.

I self studied ap us government this year because my school doesn’t offer the class. I casually studied 2/3 weeks until the exam and I’m almost positive I got 4/5, no worse than a 3. However, the reason it wasn’t so stressful is because I’m into politics and a lot of the info. Personally, unless your daughter is into psych, I would not waste the time or money self studying, but that’s just me personally.
