What has been the experience with individuals who want to self-study AP examinations after high school and during their college careers? I currently go to a public university and was wondering if they would likely or not likely accept credits for exams that I may plan to take this upcoming May.
I believe that AP credits are only available to high school students… that’s the “A” in Advanced Placement.
Not likely, but I would ask the registrar - that’s who makes final decisions about credits, whether from tests or transfer. Some schools won’t even accept transfer credit without prior approval, and even if they do they might limit what they accept. You might be better off taking CLEP tests, if your school accepts them, and you won’t be restricted to that one specific sitting in May, and having to find a school willing to administer the tests for you. If your school accepts CLEP or DANTES exams, they will most likely have a testing center on campus where you can schedule them.
Are you trying for an inexpensive way to get college credits?
As @CTScoutmom & @bjkmom said, it is unlikely that you will get college credit from your current college for APs taken during college. Even CLEP exams usually have rules about their acceptability (when, which, whether).
If you are planning to transfer, and are thinking to rack up some extra college credits before you transfer, that probably won’t work either. Transfer student transcripts are assessed for transferable credit after the student is accepted. You can check the individual schools websites for info on their general policies for accepting credits for transfer (including AP / DE / IB / etc), or you can email the offices asking what the policy is, but you won’t know for certain what they will accept from your transcript until after you have been accepted and put down a deposit (they don’t have the time to review the transcripts of everybody who is considering transferring).
