Does it usually look bad if i take AP classes in high school and not take the test? I would rather take the classes at Rice and not spend $$$ on 7 APs.

i am in the same position...plus the rice classes are good and enjoyable..from what i heard..but dont you think it will save a lot of money if you took the ap exams?

I'm going to have 10 AP exams by the time I'm done with HS, but then again, that's partially because I got to a point where the only way to advance in the sciences, math etc was to take AP classes with they way my school is structured.

i dont need to save money, because Rice will not cost a penny for me.

cANDYman, you are really going to turn people off bragging like that!

I used to think that the purpose of an AP class was to pass the AP test in May, but I know plenty of people who take AP classes just to be challenged and don't bother with the actual exams.

Personally for me, AP classes are more rigorous than regular classes of course, but I learn most through studying FOR something, in this case, the exam. If I knew I didn't have to take an exam, then I would just study for whatever chapter tests the teacher made me take, and that would be it. However, actually studying for the exam and knowing all the material well is when I learn the most.

But it's really up to you... you got accepted already :) and I highly doubt Rice will rescind its decision just because you didn't take the exams. I know people accepted early to very prestigious colleges who took AP exams and got 1s, and still ended up going.

The best reason to take the exams is that you can use the credit for distribution. Like I came into Rice with 27 credits (almost a full year's worth). I got out of all my D2 and D3 requirements so all I have to take for distribution is 12 hours of humanities. It makes it easier to double major, study abroad, graduate early, take more electives etc.

and cANDYman - don't rub it in, ok?

jenskate, can you explain more what you mean by credit for distribution?

Credit for distribution, do you mean like using the ap credit to distribute so that you don't need to take certain required classes anymore?

OK - Rice's distribution requirements are basically 12 credits in each of three areas (humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences). You can use AP credit to get out of them. So when I came in, for example, I had 6 hours of credit for AP bio and 6 for BC calc - so that was my 12 hours for natural sciences. Then I used 6 hours from US history and 6 hours from European history for my twelve hours of social sciences. Now I just have to do the humanities requirement and I'm finished with distribution.

Just wondering..how come candyman does not have to pay for rice?

because supposedly his mom works there so he got a big scholarship. Who knows?

thanks for the information, jenskate! :D It's really nice of you to always find the time here to answer everyone's questions, because I'm sure you must have a lot of work at Rice, too.

oh...hmm...is it too late for my mom to work there? just playing...i want to work my way into rice...i dont want a road into rice [ah rice...beautiful name...rice rice rice rice rice rice rice rice] slap self...no disrespect candyman

not academic scholarship, employee benefit. sorry if i came off as bragging, it was not in my intentions. i doubt she is the sole reason i got in, she works in the library and catalogs books down in the basements, so its not like shes a professor or anything. wannabeariceowl, want us to adopt you? haha

oh yes!! adopt me!!! aww...but then i would be leaving my mom...hmm...well, your mom can my be guardian :D...you are so lucky!!! what high school do you go to andy [candyman]?

george bush high school and you?

really? i have a whole bunch of friends that go there...i go to taylor high school in alief

Random thing: It seems like quite a bit of people on CC are from Taylor. I've noticed some people mention that they go there (ex. Stanford board.) It caught my interest because I have a friend that goes there. I just thought that was interesting.

cool...is it taylor alief or some other taylor high school?
