I was accepted to Stanford REA and I can't decide which AP tests to take. I'm considering taking English Literature, Calculus AB, Microeconomics and Psychology. I'm familiar with Stanford's AP test credit policy so I already know I won't get credit for some of these tests. However, is there any other way that taking these AP tests could benefit me? I really do not want to put the effort into taking these tests if there's absolutely NO point. Also, I'm a potential psych major. Any opinions?

I’m not really familiar with Stanford’s credit policy, but even if you don’t get credit, your AP scores may allow you to place out of some 100 and 101-level classes…

You probably aren’t going to make State AP Scholar if you don’t have those out of the way yet, but if there’s a chance that you make National I’d say go for it.

Thanks for the feedback! I’m currently designated an AP scholar.

The E-Lit won’t help since you have to take IHUM/PWR no matter what. Same with others except for Calculus. If you can pull a 4,5 on Calc AB and BC you can wave Math 41 and 42 bypassing two qrtrs of math. At $100 a test it’s too expensive to get results just for kicks.

BTW, if there’s any chance you’re not going to Stanford these same tests can go a lot farther at other colleges.

Right now I’m thinking that I’ll take English Lit, Psych and Calc AB. I’m also not 100% decided on Stanford so I’m starting to feel like I should take them just in case. I’m just not sure about Microeconomics because I took the class last semester and haven’t looked at the material since.

Hey, we’re taking the same classes! :)

Anyways, I thought about this too. I’m a Poli Sci major with a Social Psych minor (or so I’d like to be), so I figured taking Gov and Psych would be relevant just in case it does allow me to place out of easier classes. Plus, if I get rejected from Stanford, it does transfer nicely at other colleges, like having sophomore status which gives higher priority in selecting classes, etc.

But I suppose you could give admissions a call and see whether the scores really do transfer over into anything, y’know? And in the event that you don’t choose to go to Stanford, you can look up the other AP policies of other schools and see how your credits transfer. Stanford’s just very elitist in the fact that they rarely take AP scores for credit.

Forgive me for my mind is very scattered, and this might not make much sense, ahaha!

They don’t. The only thing they might be helpful with is to convince a professor that you don’t need a pre-req. Maybe.

Also consider the fact that you may end up transferring schools, so even if the other schools you applied to have similar AP policies, you may want to keep an open mind on which tests to take. Although I don’t think the transfer rate is very high. I don’t know any transfers, only those who drop out.

Once you actually go to Stanford, you realize how worthless AP really is.

Prereqs are almost never enforced at Stanford. Econ is the only department that does this, probably because they’re so huge. Econ does not accept AP credit.

I’d say take them for high school street cred. It really isn’t much money, and you don’t want to be that Stanford kid who wussed out of taking his AP tests
