AP Tests for SCS (and HCI?)

Hi all,

I'm about 99.9% set on going to Carnegie Mellon, and need to register for AP tests now. I'm going to be majoring in Computer Science and hopefully adding a second major in Human–Computer Interaction once I'm there. AP tests are $150 each at my school, so I don't want to sign up for tests I don't have to.

Last year I got a 5 on AP Statistics, so I see that gets me credit for 36-201 Statistical Reasoning

I see I can clearly get credit for both AP Physics C tests and AP English Composition and Literature, but I'm a little confused about AP Economics and BC Calculus.

My AP Econ class covers both Micro and Macro, but the CMU site makes it look as if they give the same credit. I'm pretty confident I can get a 5 on Microeconomics, so is there any point in taking Macroeconomics as well? Can I get 9 extra general credits or something?

For BC Calculus, I see the site says I'll need to take a placement test even if I get a 5 on the AP test. Would CMU let me test out of the first two semesters of Calculus even if I don't take the AP test? I don't expect any trouble getting a 4/5 on it even without studying, so I'd rather save my $150 if I can.

And one last question: is the AP credit I'd get from Econ and English at all useful for my major(s)?

Thanks!

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think you can get credit for 36-201 with a 5 on AP Stat any more. You just get credit but not for any courses. The AP credit for Econ/Eng would be useful so that you have to take fewer English courses, if you’re not a big fan of those; otherwise it can just be used towards your graduation total, which will give you more room to take classes you really care about. If CMU gives credit for an AP I highly advise taking it.

Thanks for the response!
As of May 2009 they give placement for AP Stat: [SCS Placement Policies](<a href=“Home | Carnegie Mellon University Computer Science Department”>Home | Carnegie Mellon University Computer Science Department)
Have they changed it in the last year?

Looks like that’s the case for SCS then! The website is a good indicator of accurate info.
