AP tests ... how beneficial are they?

hello all,

i'm considering taking the ap english language and ap computer science tests this year, even though i'm not enrolled in the actual courses (my school doesn't offer them anyway). initially i'd thought that two easy 5's would look better on my college apps, but is it really worth the money? (around $92) i know that there's a specific section on the UC application where you can list out all your ap tests, but is there also a similarly allotted section on applications to east coast universities like, say, harvard/yale/princeton? or is the whole purpose of taking ap tests simply so you can waive these classes, and they don't help toward college admissions? even if there is an allotted space, do you think the two tests will factor in any significant/noteworthy way toward my chances of getting into a college?

thanks in advance!

AP exams have no bearing on admissions, really.

The courses are more important. Feel free to take them if you want to get credit, though.
