Do AP scores count in college admissions? I have a 2310 SAT I and 800's in USH and Math II SAT II's; if my AP scores go unreported, will it be bad? Or do they mostly care about the class, not the test? Thanks for any help!

Most colleges are not interested in your AP scores. They are not reported to college until after you are accepted and graduate.

Cool. Does anyone know specifically if Duke, Penn or Chicago care?

i've heard that AP scores can really help an applicant out if they score higher than a 4 or 5 on several tests. I don't think they can hurt though.

anyways at my school the school pays for our AP tests and they send a sheet of state standardized test scores and our ap test scores when we apply to schools so even if you do bad on an AP test you can't hide it...

"Most colleges are not interested in your AP scores. They are not reported to college until after you are accepted and graduate."

That's only if you only take APs your senior year. Which is not the case with a lot of people.

What about taking an AP test w/o taking the actual course?

My history teacher (who's the chairman of his department) told me that's bad and often looked down upon especially in UC's.

tubaman, that wouldn't even be plausible since some schools don't even offer many AP's. Let's say a school offers 2 AP's, and a student wants to take some more. So he signs up for them, studies for it, and gets a 4 or 5. It shows schools that he took initiative, and should actually impress colleges.

Im saying, if I don't report one of AP scores, but I report the other two, will it be a problem. I might not be able to report USH score , but I can still report Calc AB (5 probably) and English Language (4 probably). Will my 2310 and 2x800's make it a non-issue? Considering one of them is in USH?

Bump......

i think to officially report one of them you have to report all of them... does college board send AP scores when they send the SAT score report?

I don't think so; I believe they are self-reported. But either way. What if no score for USH appeared, but scores for Calc AB and English did, regardless of the format. Would that be a big deal?

no, it might make them a little suspicious though. long as you get a 3 or above you should report it though.

AP scores are not sent to colleges unless you designated a college on your answer sheet. Why on earth would anyone do that before their senior year when they don't know where they will be attending? AP scores are NOT reported with SAT scores, just as PSAT scores are not reported with SAT scores.

Colleges are generally not interested in AP scores until after you have been accepted. Then they are used to determine credit/placement. Be warned, the most selective colleges are quite restrictive on what credit they will grant.

Why would you report the scores before you know where you are attending? To impress the adcom. If as a junior you have already accrued a bunch of 5s, I say send them to the top tier schools you are applying to. Can't hurt.

Ok. So my SAT I and SAT II's are what matter for admissions, and AP's are generally for placement?

^
Exactly.

I'll pause here to add that I frequently saw kids with perfect SAT scores and perfect grades and a gazillion AP classes get rejected. Why? Because often these kids knew how to grind, but brought nothing else to the table. And that's not who we're looking for at MIT. We admit kids who show genuine passion. Sure AP's can be one of many passion indicators - but I emphasize one of many.

are all you guys saying that taking AP's online is a nightmare b/c the course is bad, or it's too hard, or what? i want to take classes with the virginia online school system (even though i live in michigan). my school offers only three AP's, although one of them got cancelled b.c nobody wanted to tkae it (English) after hearing about he monstrous workload. yes, i know that AP's do involve a lot of work, but i have already had an experience of heavy workload with this teacher and i got near meltdown point. i wasnt as stressed with APUSH and thinki did well. anyways, the courses i plan to take online are as follows:

junior:
us govt and politics
english lang and comp

senior: psych

in school AP's:

junior: none

senior: bio
lit (witht that teacher, b/c i believe lang will prepare me for the intense writing and reading by allowing me to improve my writing to a wonderful level (at least i hope). so what do you guys think? let me know.

If you've got say,

(for sure) four 5's
(probably) four 4-5's

by the time you apply to college, will it make an impact on your app?

If you have already taken 8 AP tests by the time you apply, and you have the scores described, you are a National AP Scholar. Just list that - the colleges will know what it means.

Hm...when you are applying...can you just self-tell them the scores? or do you have to send the AP scores?
