AP Tests.....placement/credit?

Does Brown give credit for any AP tests? I’m assuming you have to take your total # (30 or 32 i think) regardless of your AP tests…but does a 5 on AP Engl Lit or Language exempt you from the English class requirement?

Or does Brown only use AP tests to guide you into what level classes to take? If so, what is the point of taking the test and paying $90 each if I’m not going to take a class in that field of study?

Placement, not credit, and I don't believe that Language or Lit are worth anything although if you send a score report as part of your application and they see you took a class wihtout taking the AP exam they may be suspect. Of course, if you're a senior and have already been admitted, I may say save the money.

It's possible to graduate early if you have a higher number of APs, but you still have to take the same number of courses at Brown in that time period so its not alleviating much and almost no one takes this option.

thanks...i'll go with saving the money then.

If you are a senior and are taking AP courses right now, be careful about not taking the tests. You will still have to send your final transcript to any school you are admitted to, and if you decide not to take the tests, you might not get credit for taking an AP course. That will look fishy on your final transcript which will get sent to your college. You can always decide not to report the scores, but I would spend the money to take the tests.

Brown does not have an English class requirement.

If you search the Brown website, you can see how individual academic departments handle AP scores. I would check each department and see if it makes sense for you to take the test. (And this is assuming you were accepted ED.) My daughter took two AP tests her junior year, but none her senior year -- she got into Brown ED, and it would have been a waste of money for her to take any.

I thought that you had to take at least 1 writing intensive course? When I looked up being a Math/CS major (not sure yet) and saw req's for the major, an english course was one of the blanks. thanks for your help btw..and your assumption was correct :)

Each department has requirements for concentrations, but Brown does not have collegewide requirements/distribution requirements. If a department requires an intensive writing class, I seriously doubt that an AP credit would be accepted.
