AP U.S. History Essay Help

I have an essay due for AP U.S. history that has to be at least 4-5 pages typed. The question is "The settling of North American by England was more economic then religiously motivated" Assess the validity of the statement, give examples. If anyone has any good ideas because at the moment I can't really think of anything. Thanks :)

To start off with, while religious persecution was important to some, most people did move for economic reasons. For instance, in England the landed aristocracy was hard to uproot, it was nearly impossibly for an "average" person to acquire enough land to feasibly live off of, much less make a profit. On the other hand, there was this land across the ocean with enough land for anyone that wanted some. Most took a chance on that journey so they could start off in a new world where their past didn't matter and their old social standing didn't matter.

Also, many of the colonies began with economic charters (ie VA) and not like the "Pilgrims" who came for religous freedom. Most people came over for profit. Plus, England (and Europe in general) were getting more crowded, making it more difficult to make a living.

Hope that gives you some starting points =).

Thanks so much :)

also pay attention to English history
from ~1649-1660, very few left England for religious reasons

Also, its an analytical essay, so I'm afraid that I will just say what happened with out really offering any indepth analysis, my AP teacher is crazy when it comes to analyzing. So if anyone has some analyzing tips as well that would be great :)

Do some analysis of how, just like today, people are motivated by economic factors. Compared to the minority who are religiously-propelled, most everyone would jump at the chance to make a few more bucks or better their position. Even though circumstances may have changed, people back during colonization were very similar to ourselves in that respect. Especially important, they had such an opprotunity for "upward mobility" if they went from a land where you were born into your social class to a place that was individualistic and you could become whatever you wanted to be through your hard work (hypothetically).

Maybe analyze human tendancies and motives, why economic reasons are more applicable and common than religious.

Once again, I hope that helps =).

ditto to what all the above posters said. ENGLAND settled the colonies mainly for economic reasons (except for the new england colonies. plymouth was founded by the pilgrims and then rhode island, and connecticut sprouted from that. but ct and RI were not results of ENGLISH settlement). hope that helps/

oh, and in terms of anaylsis, use the establishent of the religious colonies as a counterarguement to your view and then refute it. do that in one/two paragraphs. that def should show some analysis.

fact+opinion=analysis

i dont really know how or where to post in general, but
i have an essay due coming up, and im not sure how to organize it.
my teacher is very very picky, he has never given anyone a good grade on an essay, except some syudents he favors. He wants all essays in the 5 paragraph format (opening, 3 body, conclusion). The topic is "In what ways was Andrew Carnagie a representative of the undustrialist? In what ways was he an unusual industrialist?"
im not sure how to organize it, and i always ask my teacher, and he just tells me to go away
thanks

I can't be of much help on your essay, though your teacher sounds awful. At AP level, restricting to the elementary 5 paragraph essay format is just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If students can't write an essay with decent format as it is (same general idea, but not limited in number of body paragraph, really, would do the trick) they probably don't need to be in the class. While you could probably get away with that format for an open ended question like that...your DBQs will suck if he makes you do them 5 paragraph. And he just sounds mean, with not wanting to give any help. I'm getting all mad at this guy I've never even seen, haha. Plus...it seems a little early to be on Carnegie...is it a one semester class or what?

You could add primogeniture as one of the factors that led colonists to settle in the Americas for economic reasons.

Thanks for all the advice you guys. I already handed in the essay like a week and a half ago. I think I did well but who knows.

This is a pretty easy topic. The British kept the colonies PURELY for economical benefits. With the navigational laws, the British forced the colonies to trade to them, so 100% of the exports go to Britain. That means all the tobacco goes to Britain. Of course, there were religious things, but economical gain is the main reason why Britan kept the colonies going

arklogic the question wasn't why did they keep the colonies, it was for what reasons were they founded.

my class is 3 semesters long, and my teacher goes so slow. Previous apush classes tell me that he doesnt even get to the 1930's...
im in a school of about 200, so i dont cant switch teachers...hes the only one
my teacher constantly skips around in his notes, only making the class more confusing, and he never follows the book.

but hey, what am i gunna do...thats life
thanks a lot for responding

Talk about Virginia and the southern colonies. They were all about tobacco (slavery started closer to 1700 and was pretty small till 1800ish). Mass Bay and New England was fairly motivated by religion. Maryland and Pennsylvania somewhat, but Maryland went from Catholic haven to protestant and Pennsylvania was pretty liberal about religion (yay quakers). My APUSH teacher never had us write because he assumed we already knew how. Just a few DBQs here and there. He didn't feel like reading all that. We got through Nixon and Vietnam and skimmed over Reagan. We still got 5s and 4s though. It's all good.

i had this same essay question like a week and 1/2 ago!

lol, she takes old AP test questions and has us write essays once a week.
