AP U.S. History - is it ok to self-study?

I am a sophomore this year, and I bought the book "The American Pageant - 12th edition" recently for self-study since I am doing IB diploma and cannot fit in APUSH into my schedule. Though, I have been hearing rumors that APUSH is one of the hardest APs to study. What shall I study to get, say, at least 4 or 5? Will simply memorizing the textbook work? or do I have to draw out from other resources also?

I appreciate any reply that will be given, please reply! >< I'm kind of lost.

Our school district splits apush into two sections, apush I and apush II. We take apush I in our sophmore year and apush II in our junior year. After that, we take the ap exam. With all of this preparation (and our teachers do not go easy on us at all), some still get 3's. The problem stems from the amount of material you must be familiar with and the format of the test. The DBQ takes another kind of preparation all together (something I feel that only a class can properly prepare you for). If you don't do well on the DBQ oropen ended, then that could be severely detrimental to your score. Unless you feel that you have enough discipline to thoroughly prepare, I do not suggest taking the ap exam without taking the course first.
