Choose .one. of the following topics and give up to 5 strong facts about the SOCIAL aspects. Just give it your best, because I really need an approach to each. Bonus: Throw in known years

1890-1920 Progressivism. Presidents/elections involved, Legislation passed, minority action, and reason for the “progress” or reform.

Vietnam War. Presidents/elections involved, years, causes/triggers of conflict, allies?, leaders, how it was compromised, how it affected minorities

Change over time type: Latin America: Name 5 pieces of direct legislation (or executive order) that targetted Latin America (Panama, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, etc.). Give 2 military conflicts involved with Latin America and US. Give details of Colombia/Panama conflict towards the purchase of the canal’s land.

SORRY if this seems very extensive, but seriously if you can get these, I am pretty sure you will be “pwning” an essay on the APUSH. And I’ll submit what I think below, I’ll be wrong so throw in where needed.

1890-1920 Progressivism. Presidents/elections involved, Legislation passed, minority action, and reason for the "progress" or reform.

I don't know if these are strong but here goes:
*Women suffrage 19 and 20 ammendments
* Trust busting by president Roosevelt and later Wilson. Roosevelt enforced the Sherman Anti Trust Act and Wilson later enforced the Clayton Anti Trust Act.
* end to the laissez fair system. people actually wanted some price control on the goods, etc.
* The Regulations in the meat packing industry after Upton Sinclair's Jungle is published.
* Also I think the food and drug administration act ( I am not sure about the name)
* Also enviromental causes. Giving out land to make national parks and such.

A bit may be wrong but I think I have more than enough to write an essay on Progressive era and so can ignore the ones not sure of.

BTW. Those were realllllly good example Sristi, thanks!

Progressivism, 1890 -1920 or 1900 - 1917. 1912 TR runs as Bull Moose candidate (closest 3rd party to victory). Progressivism is all about the "reform" or advancement for the better good of people, colonial ideals were look upon as "crusty" or unpleasant. Women's Suffrage, Civil Rights, and Food Administration are associated with Progressivism. The 16th amendment(Income tax without apportionment), the 17th amendment(direct election of senators), the 18th (prohibition of alcohol), and the 19th (The right for vote for women) are all great examples of nationwide Progressivism. The 18th and 19th amendments were both passed in 1920 and were a great stepping stone for progressive women. The sentiment The Jungle (upton sinclair) helped pave the way for Food regulation acts and the establishment of the FDA.

My best shot: :)

Vietnam War. Presidents/elections involved, years, causes/triggers of conflict, allies?, leaders, how it was compromised, how it affected minorities

Presidents:
-started with Kennedy (sort of), was mainly with Johnson, and finished up with Nixon
-1960's - 1970's

Causes:
-Vietnam was under rule of the French (US supplied weapons to French, but eventually it fell under communist rule to Ho Chi Minh)
-Domino Theory (made the US more paranoid about losing countries to commies in Asia which made them more apt to get involved)
-Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (under Johnson, this was passed and effectively started a war with Vietnam and also gave president a blank check for military spending)
-there weren't really any more causes because this was right after the major red scare under Eisenhower and so the public was really paranoid about commies

Allies:
-I'm not sure but I don't think there are any

How it was Compromised (do you mean ends? slightly confused):
-basically the end was in sight because of the Tet Offensive (so named because it was held on the Vietnamese New Year, known as Tet) which was a battle that the North waged against many major cities held by the US
-this was shocking to the public because the US thought that with all of the bombs they had dropped in Vietnam that the North would be weakened but apparently not
-from a Military view - the North (commies) had huge huge losses
-Politically, this was a smart move on behalf of the Vietnamese commies because although they technically lost, the US was so surprised at their strength, the public began to seriously question and raise even more protests about involvement (basically it demoralized US)

-Johnson announced he wasn't running for reelection (he was a major success domestically IMO but the war ruined him)
-when Nixon is elected, he changes the way America fights
-then the US let the South Vietnamese do more of the fighting for themselves, thereby reducing American casualties (this was called "protective reaction policy")

-1973, a ceasefire is declared and combat troops start to withdraw
-1975 - American Embassy leaves
-for most of the 70's, the military downsizes

Results of War:
1. eventual creation of a professional full time army
2. Congress passes the War Powers Resolution
(this says that the president can't send troops for more than 60 days without approval of Congress)
3. gives 18 year olds the right to vote

Minorities:
-greater amount of Hispanics are brought in by the government to work in Southwestern fields (California really)
-they work below minimum wage and this leads to Caesar Chavez trying to unionize them and form a boycott
-um I don't know how minorities are affected by the war really :) Mainly the people that were affected were like students that were protesting

Okay, that's my shot at Vietnam. :) Ha, my best area is 20th century but I don't have the slightest clue about the 18th century and 19th. So basically, I'm reaaaallly screwed for the FR which is why I'm trying to study political and social trends in the 1800's. Bleh. >.<

Happy cramming guys. :)
