I'm a rising junior currently signed up for APUSH. I'm having thoughts about switching out of the class and taking HN US History 2 or HN Modern World History instead. I'd cover the same material (maybe a bit less) if I took US History 2 but I'd have to deal with much less work compared to APUSH. I'm more of a math and science person, the other AP's I'm taking are BC Calc, Physics C Mechanics, Physics C E/M, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. I would much rather focus on calculus, physics and economics to get a 5 on those. So is it doable to self study for APUSH and get a 4 or 5? Another question regarding taking an Honors class vs. an AP, would it be too bad for the rigor of my course load, switching to HN US History 2?

It’s definitely possible to self study APUSH and get a 4/5. You should get the AMSCO book to prepare yourself. However, you might as well just take the course. Either way you’re still going to have to study it. The only extra work might be taking notes or projects or whatever. But trust me, it’ll be worth it in the end because when you review in April you’ll realize that you don’t need to review a lot because all those classwork/hw helped you remember the info. Another side benefit of taking APUSH is that it’ll teach you time management really well. Also, I know kids who took bio and apush at the same time, and they managed to survive. :)

You probably will get 5 on the other APs because you’re very math-y and science-y. Plus math and physics are all about concepts, not memorization. If you get the concepts down, you’re good to go. APUSH will probably be your only problem throughout the year.

apush is mostly facts so its pretty easy to self study.
