My school has some courses that are BOTH AP and ECE and I just would like someone to explain to me the purpose of this. Esentially, when you pass an ECE course (70 or above) you get college credit. What is the purpose of me taking the AP exam if I am confident I will pass the course and get the college credits anyway?
First not all colleges will accept ap or dual enrollment classes so there is no guarantee either will do much for colleges. Those that are accepted may not give you credit but may allow you to start in a higher level. This is individual to each school. Some will accept dual enrollment classes but not ones that are needed to graduate high school.
If your dual enrollment classes (I’m assuming ECE is dual enrollment) are taught at your high school there are colleges that accept dual enrollment courses that will not accept them if they are taught at a high school with all high school students.
This is an example from NYU:
College Courses Taken While in High School
Credit may be awarded if:
Received a grade of “B” or better
NYU offers corresponding courses
In most cases, courses were taken at a college/university, with college/university students, and taught by college/university faculty.
Courses were not used to satisfy high school graduation requirements
There is no right or wrong way to go since it varies from school to school. If you have specific schools in mind you can call their admissions and ask what they say about AP and Dual Enrollment.
Differences in transfer credit policies means that if you have both the AP score and the college credit, you are more likely to get transfer credit (but not double credit).
APs: THese are very well known and you can go on any college website and see if you would get credit for certain AP scores.
ECE: I don’t know what this is. If it is taking a college class while at HS, it may or may not transfer. You won’t know until after you are accepted.
