AP vs SAT II Relative Difficulty

Specifically AP US History vs SAT II US History.

Which is harder to score a high percentile on? I guess I'm asking which has more knowledgeable people taking it?

I'm thinking SAT II since most of the people that take it want to apply to Ivies/top tier schools, but I think at the same time there are a lot of unqualified people who just take it on a whim, while for the AP almost everyone who takes it has taken a college level class.

What do you think?

i thought SAT June US history was harder than AP test. rofl.

The AP test has DBQs…that’s all I can really answer, I don’t exactly remember the individual tests.
But on the AP multiple choice test you can get 60% right and still get a 5 (with awesome essays). Also, the AP test has fewer diviations, so as long as you get a 5 you are on top, while with the SAT II you would have to an 800 to be perfect…

SAT II World test would pwn the AP World exam.

SAT 2’s are harder to score HIGHER on and MORE important.

Ap exams are usually used for class placement or bypassing a class in college.

While SAT 2’s are used for the admission decision along with the SAT Reasoning.

Personally, I would say its based on you. There are free response sections on APs, which in some peoples cases makes it harder. But on the other hand its only graded out of 5, so just barely getting a 5 makes no difference in regards to getting a high 5.

In SAT IIs, you can’t hide anything. What you get is what you get. But on the otherhand, you have a straight forward multiple choice section that is shorter in time.

To shaheiruddin, I disagree, I feel that APs are more important than SAT IIs, since they only roll around once a year. Whereas you can take SAT IIs over almost every month. Plus AP tests can give you up to 8 credits (sciences) and save a lot of money in college.

TheMan777, I agree that that AP exams are important, but in my opinion SAT 2’s are more important because they’re actually used for the admission decision while AP exams are at most of the time not.

I talked to a Duke Admission’s Officer some time ago and I remember him telling me that, at Duke at least, SAT IIs and APs were weighed equally. He said the rank of importance went something like this 1) GPA 2) SAT I 3) Essays 4) SAT II’s/APs 5) ECs
