AP vs. SAT II

I know this question probably has been posed many times, but I have never gotten a definite answer.

If a student takes many AP exams throughout high school and performs well, is it necessary for a student to take SAT II's when UVA is one of the few schools that RECOMMENDS them (whatever that means)?

i.e. AP US History exam vs. SAT II US History - they measure the same thing (AP exam probably measures a little extra)

Because often AP scores are not available until later, SAT IIs are still necessary. AP scores aren't technically for admission into a university, they are meant to be for advanced placement into courses once at a college.

So, unfortunately, you've got to take the SAT IIs. If a school only recommends them, then they'd like to see them, but it's not necessary.

Schools don't even look at AP scores unless you fail them all or something...

SAT2's are STRONGLY recommended at most schools.

But aren't SAT II's used for placement as well? Honestly, I think it would be best for someone to use that Saturday morning to raise SAT I scores opposed to taking a subject test.
