For some reasons, I performed really bad at school. If I get 5 AP 5s, will that overshadow my school grades?
AP scores usually don’t factor much into college admissions.
So they won’t be of help?
No, it won’t. You will get credit for them, assuming that the colleges accept the scores, but that will not overshadow the grades; your GPA will be negatively affected. As stated above, they don’t have any effect on college admissions.
How can you expect to get a 5 if you’re doing badly in the classes?
I had OCD. I couldn’t focus. By the time I got rid of it, my finals started. Given the fact I scored average in my finals with preparation time as less as that, I am certain I could get 5 AP 5s.
So basically I just want to use AP to present the potential I have.
Depends is record otherwise great and you are struggling in AP or you are a not good student in general? If you are a bad student it will not help other than if you start making an effort across the board and you want to show an upward trend.
If you are really good student in general and are struggling in one AP class but feel it’s because of the way the class is taught or the tests are administered then yes getting a five will help but you should go to your teacher or administration or counselor and discuss the matter so that you do not get a poor grade. I had this with APush but it worked out
There are many teachers that “change” your grade if you pass the AP test pertaining to that specific class, so talk to your teachers. However, if I were you I would simply worry more about raising my grade up than an AP score because GPA is one of the most important factors on college admissions.
How bad are we talking? AP’s usually don’t overshadow grades.
@TheDidactic 75% in my Finals.

Is it worth it?
Write about it in your college application, give a medical explanation for your grades.
Then yes, you can possibly explain at the bottom of the Common App where it says you can explain a situation.
@TheDidactic So should I invest in AP?
If you think you can get 5 from the exams, why not.
By taking the AP classes, it demonstrates your course rigor. If you do get good grade from them at school, it indicates you can handle them well. Rule of thumb is not to let your GPA suffer by taking too many AP.
Yes, you should still invest in the AP’s. It shows rigor and defines the quality of your education.
Great. Thanks a lot. I’m going for it.
