Hi everybody! I am really stuck on whether to do AP world history or not. for the first time ever we are being offered it freshmen year..although we have never even taken regular world history before. will it be too much for a freshmen to handle? I was interested in doing AP world when we got our registration cards, but many people started scaring me off, so in the end I chose AP Psych instead and will be doing honors world history. But today, we got our "Amnesty Day" cards, where we are allowed one last chance to change our minds. I feel like I want to change back to AP World and do another elective such as intro to engineering design instead. Doing AP World seems to fit in with many of my plans. I originally wanted to take it freshmen year because I thought that if I knocked it out freshmen year, I would feel prepared for all of the other APs coming up. I also thought that if I took AP world freshmen year, then sophomore year I could take the other two APs offered, AP psych and AP human geography. If I were to take AP psych freshmen year and save AP world and AP human geography for sophomore year, then I thought it would be redundant doing world history two years in a row. And, i feel like 9th grade is the best time to do the harder AP because in 9th grade, we have the least work load. That way, in tenth grade i could take the two easier APs with other harder tenth grade courses. Also freshmen year if I do AP World then i have room for the PLTW Intro to Engineering Design elective. That would mean two 6 pt. weighted courses to my GPA, rather than doing honors world and AP psych, which is only one 6 pt weighted course. However, an AP psych teacher (who taught AP World in Virginia) strongly advised me not to take AP World, saying that AP world was not for freshmens and that he saw no benefit of taking it. That made me think that if i took AP psych freshmen year, and AP human geography the next year, and no AP world at all, then sophomore year I would also have room for principles of bio med science. My main focus in my education is science anyway, so I was thinking that maybe there is no point in doing AP world at all when I could do AP psych (partly related to science) and the following year have a slot open for bio-med science. However I was talking to one of my teachers and he said that I might regret not taking AP world and not going for the challenge. My teacher also said something along the lines of "they offered it for a reason, it was for the people that can handle it. I think you can handle it, and I think you should go for it." So my main question is, how do you feel about freshmens taking AP World History next year? I have a great work ethic and am willing to do whatever it takes to get an A in that class. Currently, I have a 100 in social studies for my year round grade. Do you think a freshmen like me could manage at least an 85 in AP World History? If so, then I think it would be better to go for AP World because a B in an AP class is better than an A in an honors class. The main thing holding me back from marking down AP world is the fact that I might not be able to handle it and might greatly suffer throughout the year and end up with a poor grade that brings down my GPA. So if you have time, I would greatly appreciate your advice!! It would be nice if you could reply by tomorrow night, because our "Amnesty Day" cards are due this Friday. Thanks!!

tl;dr 10charr
take it if you want if not dont kk COOL

I haven’t taken APWH but I have taken plain ol’ history honors and it was pretty easy.
If you like history I’d go for it.

To be honest…I didn’t read the full thing, but I get your main question. AP World is only open to sophomores and up at my school, so I took World history last year as a freshman and am currently taking AP World; I definitely could’ve handled it last year, I really don’t feel like it is a class where you need to have taken the regular version before attempting AP. From what you say, sounds like you can handle it. To be honest, last semester I slacked and really didn’t even put 100% into it (think more like 80-90%) and ended up with a 89; this semester I’m putting closer to 95% into the class and so far have an A. I don’t even really like world history as much as US (especially pre-1700’s, which is about 1/2 of the class).

If you want any other details about AP World, I’d be happy to help. :)

If say take AP world this year. If they didn’t think freshman could handle it they wouldn’t offer it to you
