AP World History

I'm a rising sophomore at a California public high school. I'm going to be taking AP World History, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips for succeeding in that class. Also, is it true that you have to memorize all the European countries and their locations (not that that's is so bad)?

No. It is a easy course. I easily got 95+ averages.

In my school, it is a 2 year course (so I took it freshmen, and now im a rising sophomore having to take it still).

You don’t have to memorize European countries/locations. You have to memorize the culture, social class, economy, politics of the region/empire however. Any vague sense of it’s location is acceptable.

Tips? None. It’s not that hard of a class. Just memorize, do your homework, and ace the test. That’s all.

I’m taking WHAP this upcoming year, too. At my school, I’ve been hearing that World is pretty intense. I think it’s just that the teachers make the first couple weeks ridiculously and unnecessarily hard in order to weed out the undesirables. Haha.

I guess I’ll be hanging around this thread often.

Hahaha so I’m not the only one who has no idea what to expect.

I took it last year and I got a 5. If anything, you should always read the book, really, just read teh book.

Took it freshman year. It was an easy class and an easy exam.

Really? it seems really hard

It’s only hard if you get stuck with a ridiculous essay on a period your teacher may not have covered well. Just use a review book to make sure you cover it all.

^ What prep books do you recommend?

Which is easier? World or Euro? Both I have no extensive knowledge and I am self-studying.

Forget all other review books. You need nothing except this one:

[Amazon.com: AP World History: An Essential Coursebook, 2nd Ed (9780983176626): Ethel Wood: Books](http://www.amazon.com/AP-World-History-Essential-Coursebook/dp/0983176620/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1313887468&sr=8-2)

Trust me. BUY THAT. I credit my 5 to it.

Bump… any more advice?

So, I just finished my first week of school. WHAP has been absolute torture. 12 pages of reading with notes assigned on the first day (which wasn’t so bad). Quiz over those pages on the second day. After the quiz, we didn’t really do anything. We just reviewed the cosmic calendar. On the third day, we were assigned 24 pages of reading and notes. On the fourth day, we were assigned 12 pages of reading with notes. Oh, and today I had a quiz over the readings from the third and fourth day of school. Only 1 week into the school year and I’ve already taken 2 quizzes in world history. Sorry, my thoughts are kind of jumbled here.

Oh, and what textbooks are you guys using? Our school got brand new books for the AP students this year. We’re using “Ways of the World: A Brief Global History with Sources” by Robert W. Strayer

My class is pretty intense. I’m pretty anxious when I’m in there. The teacher is excellent so she doesn’t take crap. I have to read for about 2-3 hours every night just to prepare for the questions that are gonna be asked in class the next day. Pretty soon we’ll be having a unit test in chapters 1-3. I have devoted my entire life to that class now. I just spent about three hours studying (on a Friday night) to prepare for class on Monday. Sundays are pretty much the only day I have to relax. We use the “Earth and Its People Third Edition” text book. I also use the Princeton Review book for clarification. Tomorrow, I’m having six hour study session with a friend at Barnes and Nobles. It’s gonna be a long year! Hopefully one filled with lots of As

APWH was the most ridiculously easy AP test ever. I knew the answer to almost every question on the test before taking the class. Being completely truthful with you, at my school, most of the people who were accepted into that class were not accepted into any other AP class because they would not have passed. Unless the teacher goes (far, far, far, like, to the moon) above and beyond what you need to get a 5, the class will undoubtedly be a joke. I actually took the SAT II before I took the class and got a 760 or 770, I don’t quite recall.

Before the test, I studied the Chinese Dynasties song. There are excellent examples on Youtube, which IIRC, we can’t post here, but this is the view ID: v=XqHR1uAc_-Q
It’s like this, to the tune of Fr

It really depends on the teacher. My teacher was awful. We actually DID have to memorize where the European countries are (which I thought was quite easy), as well as the rest of the world. This wasn’t because it was important for the exam, but just because my teacher was a geography nerd. I ended up with an A, but that’s just because my teacher was lazy. He didn’t prepare us for the exam; I got a 2. However, other posters on here seem to have had better experiences with the class, so it really depends.

I love AP World History! This is the first year my teacher is teaching AP, but he is doing a fantastic job! The class is ridiculously easy. I have 103% in the class right now, and we just finished the eight chapter in Strayer’ Ways of the World–my favorite textbook ever! Maybe I’m just a history geek, but I love the class!

Its an easy class. Keep up with HW and study vocab and you will do fine.

I also took AP World as a sophomore. It’s not too bad of a class. Just be prepared for a lot of reading. My teacher didn’t make us memorize the European countries. But we did have to learn to freehand a fairly accurate map of the globe (with all the curves of Europe and SE Asia) and label some important cities/geographical features. It was pretty hard, but it helped a lot. We had to do it as a test.
