AP World kids...

Hey guys. Is there something wrong with my AP World class because we rarely write timed essays.

We haven’t done anything timed, we just write all the time. We’re only doing five or six actually AP style writing pieces this year. By senior year - as its a senior or junior class, generally, where I am - you should be able to write a timed essay without a problem. It’s the material that counts.

last year, in my apwh, didn’t do that much time-write essay either. did only 6-7 for the whole year

^Same. Don’t worry, just so long as you absorb the technique. We did about 3 out of class essays, then the second semester our teacher told us she would have to start cracking down on the in class essays. We did one on the last class period of the first semester, but we had 90 minutes (lol), and we did only about 3 more the second semester, gradually decreasing the time limit until we got down to 45 minutes. We never actually got to 40 mins.

Here’s the thing, when it comes down to it, there are very few things needed in an essay. You need a certain amount historical facts, you need to address all parts of the question, and if its a well thought out/analytical paper you’ll usually get enough expanded core points for an 8-9. On the day of the test you’ll (if you’re like most people) realize that you have to spit out something in 130 minutes, and you’ll speed through them.

That said, and given the little practice I had, I finished the essays with 20 minutes to spare, and I still got a 5.

The same went for me with US History. I had never written a timed essay in US History. In fact, we had only done three or four AP style essays in the whole class. I got to the US History AP exam, wrote my essays with almost thirty minutes to spare, and got a 5. I must have done well on the essays because the multiple choice was very difficult for me… I didn’t read the text at all.

This first marking period we were introduced to all the essays. We did a timed Compare & Contrast essay along with a CCOT (Changes & Continuities Over Time). We also did a take-home DBQ.

do you guys use any supplement books?

Everyone knows AMSCO for US, VIAULT for EURP, but what is good with World?
