Does anyone have experience with the app process for on-campus apartments and how the leases work for those who have summer classes starting before May 31 (ie. Section J or X classes)? D and her 3 friends have applied for Hadley or Flint, with 12 month leases, but we were also wondering what the likelihood is that they'll be split into groups of two or actually get neither since they all have only 4 semesters on campus at this point. Also, it looks like the standard leases begin on 5/31 or in August...what do kids taking summer classes before that do? Sublet or move to a summer dorm for 2 weeks?

She will go see the URHA when she has time, just trying to figure out if we need a backup plan (other than getting an off-campus apartment, obviously!) in case they do get an apartment on campus but can't move directly from dorm to apartment.

Crazed, we went into this thinking she would move off campus after this semester, so she’ll just get an apt with 3 of her friends. They did a few visits to off-campus complexes during fall semester, though not the ones closest to North, and we actually bought her a used SUV over Christmas break in anticipation of that and upcoming fieldwork. Then, after really thinking about the landlord/leasing issues, extra utilities, possible winter driveway/sidewalk maintenance if they rented a private house/apartment, security/neighborhood concerns, and the extra gas/maintenance of her vehicle, we decided it might be worthwhile just to try for the UB apartments. I drew the line at Hadley and Flint…so not paying for South Lake, even if they could get in there!

She did go to the Hadley open house this week and asked about the possibility of early move-in for May. They told her the director could probably work something out for them if they’re offered a spot. I forgot to ask her when/if they’re notified…do you know? What is your S’s backup plan?

Btw, my D’s room faces Greiner this year and she’s had to live with all the noise and dust…she and her friends think everyone on that side of her dorm should be allowed to live just there next year if they want to. I can’t blame them as the crews started work very early in the mornings, 6 days a week, last fall and it was so loud at times that I couldn’t understand her even with the windows closed!
