So I think I'm done with living in the dorms. Some people told me that I should start looking for an apt. in November. The problem is I don't even know how to search for one. Ideally, I'd like something that is walking distance to school. What are some sites that I should use to look for apartments? When should I begin my search? Thanks!

right now, i think the best way to start is by asking people now where they live, and whether or not they like it. keep track of places that sound really good or really bad. ask how much rent is.

starting early is only necessary if you're looking at someplace with a long waitlist, ie the pink palace (top of gayley and landfair), or places like jefferson court (midvale). i found my place in spring... but i was joining qipao, who already lived here. keep in mind that if you have one roommate in mind, you can search for people who need 2 people to fill up their existing apartment (like a 2-bedroom place).

whenever you feel inclined, take a walk around. call some managers and ask when they will be taking names for a waitlist, if they do. decide whether you want to be close to gayley, or close to south campus (tiverton area), or close to weyburn terrace (campus shuttle stop!) or south of wilshire or on the other side of campus near the sororities.

main thing right now is just ask around to get familiar with locations, complexes, good/bad stories, etc.

well, if you want walking distance, walking through westwood village is a good place to start. Kelton, Midvale, Glenrock, Landfair, Levering are your main streets to look and you have to decide whether you want a larger complex (a la Midvale Luxury @ 540 Midvale) or one of the smaller duplexes that has fewer units and a more homey feel. If you want a webpage listing, Westside Rentals is the big one. But websites are usually unhelpful here, you have to walk around, knock on doors to get the #'s of landlords and generally ask people you know for recommendations.

Hey, I would actually rather live in the dorms if I could, since I don't know anyone here and it is very lonely. Wanna trade? =) Unfortunately, I'm a grad student; so I don't think that's an option. =(

not only that but you'll be considered a loser by your fellow grad students for mingling with undergrads.

i would say find roommates first.

its much easier and less stressful to get people first and find a place together than finding a place first then trying to get people to fill it.

Thanks for the help everyone! I actually do have roommates already, so I'll start browsing and see which complex we want.

If you don't mind sharing, what's wrong with the dorms?
