Apartment questions

Now that summer is fast approaching & S’s apartment is going to be vacant most of the summer I have some concerns. He’ll take his valuables home, but there will still be things I wouldn’t want to replace out of pocket. My ins agent isn’t licensed in AL so he can’t help me. Can you buy renters insurance only online? He said I should get personal liability as well if anyone gets hurt. Really?

And I’m concerned about the ac. What is the minimum it should be set to for the summer to protect the furnishings from mold/mildew etc? Wonder if the management company checks this?

Is anyone else going to be in that apt during the summer?

There are at least two national companies that sell student insurance. I can’t remember the names, but if you post in the Parent forum, they’ll have the names/links.

edit…this is one:

As for the A/C…does the thermostat have programming ability? It would seem costly to run it 24/7. If you could program it to come on a few hours a day to get the humidity out, that might work. If I had to run it 24/7, I’d probably set it to 80…enough for it to come on and keep moisture out.

I’m in Ttown a lot (and will be here a lot over the summer), if you’d like me to check in on his place every so often, I can do that.

Someone moves in early July, but otherwise it will be vacant. Priced geico online but they were expensive, I’ll try some others. I already purchased laptop insurance for $200 which in retrospect I could have put towards the renters ins although there is no deductible with the laptop ins.
I’m checking with the management company. Wondering if he should bag the mattress or wrap in plastic?

I wouldn’t wrap the mattress in plastic. That would trap moisture and encourage bacteria/mold growth.

There are products like Damp Rid that help control moisture in rooms and closets.

I would also spray the apt for bugs, especially bed bugs around the bed.

do you know if his thermostat is programmable?

I already purchased laptop insurance for $200 w

That seems very high. Can that be cancelled and the prorated amount returned to you?

Do bed bugs come out more in the summer? What would he spray? Eek on many levels.

We were told by our agent and by an agent in Tuscaloosa that although our OOS homeowner’s insurance with State Farm would cover D’s belongings in the apartment OOS that it would be best to purchase a separate policy as renter’s insurance. The concern was the possibility of having a claim which might adversely affect our homeowner’s policy. We were able to do this with an agent on University Boulevard in a matter of minutes. The cost was minimal, around $120.00 total for $15,000 worth of coverage.

I’ll send you a message with a link to the agent’s website and contact information.

Waiting to hear about the thermostat & what management says.

Nssi looks reasonable, this might work & I can cancel the laptop ins. Think $5K might cover everything & its only $130 with a $25 deductible. Why I didn’t have this on my radar I don’t know. He went down with laptop insurance as his laptop was stolen prior to Sr year of HS.

Also check out CSI. We have D’s stuff insured with them: [CSI College Student Insurance - Instant Quote](http://www.collegestudentinsurance.com/index.aspx)
