apartment theft?

Hi guys,

I'll be moving into an apartment for my junior year this fall. Just wondering how the experience has been for yall who have already lived in an apartment, in terms of theft? Is it safer than the dorms? I know that some companies show their tenants' rooms to prospective leasees even when the tenant is not home, which is a bit unnerving. Would you feel comfortable leaving valuables in your room. I'm still debating whether or not to bring my LCD TV...

Would love to hear your guys' input.

Thanks---

Depending on your landlords, I'm sure if you asked them not to show your place, they would oblige. If you haven't signed the lease yet, then ask if you can make changes, and alter that clause. The threat of you leaving, especially if they don't have all the units full is probably enough for them to cave.

I never lived in the dorms, (I lived 3 years in the fraternity) but my duplex was kept unlocked most of the time. It was never a worry and it allowed our friends down the street access whenever, which we also had with their house.

Like most things it is going to depend on where you live. If you are smart and stay out of trouble spots, don't leave valuables in visible locations, and lock up appropriately then you'll be fine.

just make sure you lock your doors and bring things inside. i had a grill stolen but thats because my roommates left it outside overnight.

i've never had a break in or issue with theft at my apt.
just try to find a secure building, lock your doors/windows, set rules w/ your roomies about company, and invest in renters insurance, that's about everything you can do to protect your belongings.

as far as showing your apt, you'll have to look into local law. where i live the landlord can show the apt 30 days before lease expires, only if we have not indicated a renewal.

Renters insurance...buy some. Or make sure you have nothing of value (personal or monetary) in the apartment that wouldn't kill you to lose.
